The Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist in Treis-Karden on the Moselle is a neo-Gothic church.

Location, building history and structure

The previous building became too small for the growing community at the end of the 18th century. A first draft by the architect Froideau in 1813 - still in French times - envisaged a barrel-vaulted basilica with a portal front, which was designed according to classical dimensions. The plan was subsequently discarded due to the political changes and the Koblenz government architect Johann Claudius von Lassaulx was commissioned to design the new church. Lassaulx chose the Rhenish neo-Gothic style that he had influenced in this area .

The church building is on an elevated position between the Zillesberg and the Münchelskopf and can therefore be easily recognized from a distance, for example from the nearby Moselle. The high church tower with a slate helmet and concave individual surfaces, which are typical of Lassaulx, also contribute to this.

The foundation stone was laid on May 2, 1824. The outer facade was built from the gray wacke that is distinctive and typical for the area . In 1828, the construction was completed and was on July 1 of that year benediziert . The patron saint and namesake of the church was John the Baptist . The consecration was celebrated on June 26, 1831 - the Sunday after St. John's Day - by Trier Bishop Joseph von Hommer . The anniversary of the consecration of the church, as well as the patronage , have since been celebrated in Treis every year on the Sunday after St. John's Day as a fair . The Stumm organ was completed in 1836. The nave is over 47 m long and about 23 m wide. The church tower is 73.5 m high from the ground to its needle point. The six pointed arch windows are almost 7 m and break through the nave walls on both sides. There are no windows in the choir itself.

The exterior of the Church has changed little since then. For example, the tower helmet had to be rebuilt at a lower height in 1921 after a fire.

Furnishing

The interior of the church is clearly characterized as the "John the Baptist Church" in its furnishings. A large portrait of Matthias Schraudolph's patron saint is in the right of the two side altars . The left side altar bears a portrait of the Mother of God by the same artist . Below, in the predella , are smaller works by Schraudolph. On the left there are paintings of Saints Monika , Margaretha and Katharina , as well as Saints Barbara , Agnes and Elisabeth . On the right side altar the saints Joachim , Kastor and Aloysius , as well as Laurentius , Werner and Josef .

The four stained glass windows represent the most important events in the life of John the Baptist:

  1. The announcement of his birth. You shall call your son Johannes.
  2. The baptism of Jesus in the Jordan by John. I need to be baptized by you.
  3. Jesus and John. No greater man than John the Baptist.
  4. The beheading of John. It has to grow, I have to lose weight.

On the outer facade there is another statue of John.

organ

The organ was built from 1835 to 1837 by the organ builders Gebr. Stumm (Rhaunen-Sulzbach). The organ case was probably designed by the church's architect, Johann Claudius Lassaulx. In the course of time the instrument has been redesigned and redesigned several times. In 2013 the organ was extensively restored by Johannes Klais Orgelbau (Bonn), with the original arrangement being restored and further changes being reversed. The slider chests -instrument has 29 registers on two manuals and pedal . The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
