history

In the 16th century, the population and the church in Harbke became Evangelical-Lutheran with the introduction of the Reformation .

With the need for labor triggered by industrialization , Catholics also settled in the Harbke area again, so that the foundation stone of the church was laid on September 26, 1913. In addition to mining in the Helmstedt lignite district , the briquette factory and agriculture, the Harbke power plant , which went into operation in 1909, offered job opportunities. On November 9, 1913, the church was consecrated by the pastor of the Church of St. Joseph and Augustine (Hötensleben) .

From 1945 to 1990 the church was only two kilometers from the inner-German border . On May 26, 1952, the border was completely sealed off by the People's Police , which had a significant negative impact on the Harbker economy. As a result, some of the miners from the Harbke area were relocated to the Saxon lignite area in the summer of 1952 .

On October 13, 2007 the community association " Eilsleben - Großalsleben - Hadmersleben - Hamersleben - Hötensleben - Klein Oschersleben - Oschersleben - Sommerschenburg - Völpke " was established, to which the Harbker Church belonged from then on. On November 28, 2010, today's parish “St. Marien ". Since the number of people attending services had become very low, the church has not been used for Sunday services since 2011. The 2011 census in the European Union showed that of the 1628 inhabitants of Harbke, only 67 belonged to the Roman Catholic Church. Today the closest Catholic churches with Sunday services are each about six kilometers away in Helmstedt and Sommerschenburg .
