Saint Mary's Church

The Sankt-Marien-Kirche , official name "Immaculate Conception", is the Catholic church in Klein Oschersleben in Saxony-Anhalt .

The church belongs to the parish of the Sankt-Mariae-Kirche in Oschersleben (Bode) , in the deanery Egeln of the diocese of Magdeburg . The church named after Maria (mother of Jesus) is located between Poststrasse and Untere Kirchstrasse.

Architecture and history

In the 16th century, the population in the Oschersleben area became Evangelical-Lutheran with the introduction of the Reformation . Only in the 19th century did Catholics resettle in greater numbers in Klein Oschersleben; it was mostly workers from Eichsfeld and Upper Silesia who found employment as harvest workers and industrial workers. The opening of the Magdeburg – Halberstadt railway line in 1843 , to which Klein Oschersleben was connected via Hadmersleben station, and the sugar factories built in Klein Oschersleben in 1863 and 1879 contributed to the economic development of Klein Oschersleben.

Plans to build the church began in 1895. The foundation stone was laid on June 24, 1900. Dechant Hüllen carried out a provisional inauguration of the brick church, built in the neo-Gothic style, on August 18, 1901 . The bells were put into operation for the Rosary Festival in 1901. The consecration took place on August 20, 1902 by Auxiliary Bishop Augustinus Gockel , the confirmation on August 21 of the same year.

To the west of the long side of the single nave is the church tower on a square floor plan. The polygonal choir is incorporated into the nave. The windows of the building and the west portal are provided with tracery in late Gothic forms.

inside view

The interior of the nave is vaulted with a pointed arched barrel vault. There is a ribbed vault in the choir . The equipment is described as rather reserved. Noteworthy is an elaborate reredos of the main altar in late Gothic form from the time the church was built, it shows the evangelists Matthew , Mark , Luke and John . There are three figurative colored glass windows in the choir. In the middle they show Our Lady in a halo, to the left and right of it Simon Peter and Paulus of Tarsus . The church stalls leave a central aisle free and offer 114 seats. Under the organ loft there is a statue of the Sacred Heart , a copy of the miraculous image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help , a confessional and a memorial plaque for the fallen of the two world wars . The interior of the church also includes statues of St. Anthony of Padua , Elisabeth of Thuringia and Joseph of Nazareth , a baptismal font and 14 small stations of the cross . The tapestry is from more recent times. In the anteroom of the church there is a mission cross , which commemorates the popular missions from 1908 to 1964.

In 1906 Johannes Hatzfeld took up his first position as vicar in Klein Oschersleben. The organ was installed in March 1910 and the inauguration took place at Pentecost 1910. It was built as Opus 193 by the Eggert Orgelbau-Anstalt ( Anton Feith jr.) From Paderborn , whose founder himself came from Klein Oschersleben, and is still used today. In the First World War a cast steel bell was delivered. After the war a new bronze bell could be purchased. In the spring of 1920 the church received a painting that is no longer available today, and in August 1927 the Marien Altar was erected. In 1930 a heater was installed.

As a result of the Second World War , the number of Catholics also increased in Klein Oschersleben as a result of the influx of expellees from the eastern regions of the German Empire . After the roof had been repaired in 1957 and lightning protection had been added, the interior plaster and the electrical system were renewed in 1960. In 1965 the bells were switched to electrical actuation. Since 1985 the church no longer has a local priest , but is looked after by the clergyman from the neighboring church of St. Peter and Paul in Hadmersleben . Another renovation took place between 1988 and 1990. At the same time a new altar was built. The altar conscription was carried out on December 16, 1990 by Bishop Leo Nowak . The celebration of the 100th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone took place on June 24, 2000 in the presence of Auxiliary Bishop Gerhard Feige . At that time around 230 Catholics belonged to the catchment area of the church, which, in addition to Klein Oschersleben, also includes the neighboring villages of Groß Germersleben and Peseckendorf .

On October 13, 2007 the community association "Eilsleben - Großalsleben - Hadmersleben - Hamersleben - Hötensleben - Klein Oschersleben - Oschersleben - Sommerschenburg - Völpke" was established, to which the church has belonged since then. On November 28, 2010, today's parish “St. Marien ". The parish vicaria Immaculate Conception in Klein Oschersleben was dissolved in this context.
