St. Josef Illerbachen

St. Josef is the Roman Catholic church built in 1707/08 in Illerbachen , a suburb of Berkheim . It is a branch church of pastoral care unit 2 Rot-Iller in the Biberach district in Upper Swabia .

History and location

The small church is centrally located in the center of the village on the Qu stream and on the county road to Zell, a suburb of Rot an der Rot, half a kilometer south of Berkheim. The church is enclosed by a shoulder-high wall , inside which is the cemetery of the parish and the memorial for the sons of the place who died in the two world wars and other victims of violence. Like Berkheim, Illerbachen was part of the spiritual territory of the Premonstratensian Abbey in Rot an der Rot until the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss on April 27, 1803 .

Building

The church is a rectangular building with a retracted choir and tower sacristy . The tower of the church has a belfry and four sound openings, above which an onion dome covered with copper . Below the eaves of the church tower, four clock faces of the church tower clock are embedded.

An outstanding feature inside the church is the painted wooden ceiling by the barrel painters Johann Jakob Kuen, Johann Baptist Kuen and Michael Fetz from 1708. The high altar is dated to 1707. The Vesper picture is a copy of an original from the 15th century . The richly decorated and gilded side altars from 1688 come from the previous church or another church in the spiritual territory. On the south wall of the church there is a painted antependium from 1657. No changes were made to the church apart from the installation of a popular altar in the 1970s. Church flags, valuable procession poles and processional crosses have been cared for for centuries, stored and either placed in the church or they are in the church treasury . The gallery and organ are painted.
