The Church of St. Joseph , sometimes also spelled St. Josef , is the Roman Catholic Church in Othfresen , a village in the municipality of Liebenburg , in the Goslar district in Lower Saxony . It is a branch church of the parish of St. Mary of the Annunciation with its seat in Liebenburg, in the Deanery Goslar-Salzgitter of the Diocese of Hildesheim . The house of God named after Saint Joseph of Nazareth is located on the Feldberg 2 property (corner of Sonnenklink).

history

After the population of Othfresen had become Evangelical Lutheran through the introduction of the Reformation , a Catholic parish was only formed again in Othfresen as a result of the Second World War , triggered by the influx of Catholic refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Empire , especially from Silesia . Their services were initially held in the Protestant church. Before that, Othfresen belonged to the parish of Liebenburg.

In 1956 the foundation stone for the church, and in 1957 followed the consecration of the church by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen .

In 1968, in Dörnten, about four kilometers away, the St. Christophorus church was built, which also belonged to the Ohtfresen parish. After almost 30 years of use, the church house was given up again because the number of Catholics in Dörnten had decreased and repairs to the building had become necessary. The former church house has been privately owned since 1997.

Since July 1, 2007, the church in Othfresen has belonged to the then newly established deanery Goslar-Salzgitter, previously it belonged to the deanery Goslar. Since then, the church has also belonged to the parish of St. Mary of the Annunciation in Liebenburg. Due to declining financial resources, but also the decreasing number of priests and church members, all churches in the Diocese of Hildesheim were classified according to their future needs. At that time, the church in Othfresen was seen as "not absolutely necessary for pastoral development" and was scheduled to be closed until 2013. A proposal to convert the church into a fire station was not implemented. As a result, on November 21, 2011, the St. Joseph Othfresen e. V. founded, which ensures the preservation of the church to this day.
