St. Catherine is the Roman Catholic parish of Schleidener district Herhahn in Euskirchen in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The church is St. Consecrated to Catherine of Alexandria . The parish also includes Morsbach , the hamlet of Hühnerbusch and the Vogelsang Ordensburg .

location

The church building is located in the western part of Herhahn directly at the cemetery. On the north side the street Herhahn leads past the church and on the south side the Katharinenstraße.

General

In the Middle Ages Herhahn belonged to the parish of Olef and since 1660 to the parish of St. Rochus, Wollseifen , which became an independent parish that year . Since Herhahn did not have its own house of worship, the residents first tried to build their own chapel in 1872 . However , these were broken up by the Kulturkampf . It was not until 1909 that a building association was founded to build their own church. In that year, the Archdiocese of Cologne , to which Herhahn belonged until 1930, also approved the establishment of its own pastoral care office. In 1926 Herhahn finally got its own church, which was now a branch church of Wollseifen.

Due to the establishment of the Vogelsang military training area and the associated evacuation of Wollseifen in 1946, the parish church there could no longer be used and was no longer accessible to the public. Thus parish life shifted to Herhahn. On July 26, 1948, Herhahn was initially separated from the Wollseifen parish, which was formally still in existence, and made an independent parish. In 1957, the Wollseifen parish was finally dissolved and Herhahn was added. Since then, the parish has been called St. Katharina Wollseifen-Herhahn.

Building history

Herhahn never had its own house of worship. The residents had to go to the neighboring Wollseifen to attend the service.

In 1920 the Cologne architect Edmund Renard made plans for his own church. The new church was completed in September 1926. Due to the increased population, this church was no longer sufficient in the early 1970s.

Today's parish church was built between 1972 and 1973 according to plans by the Heimbach architect Franz Daheim . The church from 1926 was previously demolished. The consecration took place on August 25, 1973.
