General

Dreiborn was originally a branch of the parish of Olef . In 1461 a chapel in Dreiborn was first mentioned in a document. It is not known whether there was a church in the village before. In the document mentioned, Elsa von Brohl endowed the chapel with foundations that financed its own clergyman. In 1471 Bartholomäus Glockener was chaplain at the chapel.

In the course of the Reformation , Anabaptists settled in Dreiborn , members of a radical Reformation movement. However, these were expelled in 1555 by Mr. von Dreiborn, Friedrich von Eltz . As a result, the place remained Catholic. From 1559 to around 1676, Father from Mariawald Abbey provided pastoral care in Dreiborn. From 1676 Franciscans from Schleiden looked after the branch community. Since 1736 baptisms and burials were allowed in Dreiborn, so that the faithful no longer had to go to Olef. In 1778 Dreiborn was also granted the right to marry. This gave the place a certain degree of independence on the part of the church, but formally it still belonged to the parish of Olef.

In the course of the French era , Dreiborn was added to the parish of Wollseifen in 1802 and thus belonged to the diocese of Liège , previously the place belonged to the archbishopric of Cologne . In 1804 the place finally became an independent parish in the diocese of Liège. In 1818 the parish came to the diocese of Aachen . Since the diocese had been dissolved in 1825, Dreiborn fell back to the Archdiocese of Cologne, to which it always belonged before the French occupation. Since 1930 the parish has belonged to the re-established diocese of Aachen.

Building history

St. Georg (Dreiborn), central nave

The chapel mentioned in 1461 was a simple hall building made of quarry stone and had a three-storey bell tower . In 1804 the chapel received the status of the parish church.

In 1857 a building association was founded with the aim of building a new church. In 1892 the Graff siblings donated a piece of land to the parish to build a new parish church. The parish then bought neighboring parcels in order to be able to build a new place of worship. In 1893 the construction of today's church could begin. The plans for this come from the Cologne architect Theodor Kremer . Just one year later, the new church was completed and was on October 3, 1894 consecrated to be. Then the old church was torn down except for the tower. Today this serves as a war memorial.

In 1971 the building was restored and between 1973 and 1976 the church was repaired and the chancel was redesigned according to plans by Heinz Dohmen . The high altar , the pulpit , the communion bench and the two side altars were also removed.

Building description

Apse with sacrament house and baptismal font

St. Georg is a three-aisled step - hall church in the neo-Romanesque style . The choir in the east is single-bay and closes with a semicircular apse . This is followed by the transept, which stands out only minimally from the nave. To the west of the transept is the three-aisled and four-bay nave. The central nave is slightly higher than the two side aisles, but does not have an upper cladding window . The central nave and side aisles are connected by arched arcades that rest on round columns. In the west is the bell tower built in front of the central nave , which is accompanied on the left and right by the entrance halls to the side aisles. The lower two floors of the bell tower are square, the upper two floors are octagonal. The tower is crowned by an eight-sided tower dome. The interior is spanned by groin vaults. The exterior of the parish church is partially faced with slate . A total of 235 seats are offered to the believers.

Furnishing

The people's altar , the tabernacle , the candlesticks in the chancel, as well as the cross and the ambo are works by the Kohlscheider artist Peter Bücken from 1974. The font was created in 1804. A Pietà from the 18th century as well as several figures by the local artist Hubert Mertgens from the 19th century are also worth mentioning . They were once carved for an altar. There is also a brass chandelier in the central nave. It was created in 1896.

The organ is a work of the organ building workshop Gebrüder Müller from Reifferscheid . It was made in 1895, has a pneumatic-mechanical action and 17 stops .

Organ of the Müller brothers (Reifferscheid)

The stained glass windows are works by R. Stumm. The windows in the side aisles show geometric shapes and the windows in the transept show the Queen Mary and Jesus Christ as Good Shepherds . The windows in the choir are works by Pitt van Treeck . They represent the seven sacraments in abstract forms.
