St. Johann Baptist (Olef)
St. Johann Baptist is the Roman Catholic parish church of the Schleiden district of Olef in the Euskirchen district in North Rhine-Westphalia .
The church building is dedicated to John the Baptist and entered under number 24 in the list of architectural monuments in Schleiden .
history
A church in Olef probably existed as early as the 13th century. At that time, Olef was already an independent parish , making it one of the oldest parishes in the Eifel. Today's massive bell tower dates from the 14th century and is the oldest part of the church. The current nave with choir was added to the tower in the 15th century. It is very likely that there was a church in the same place at an earlier time. Until 1804, the Dreiborn branch was part of the parish area, but it was then elevated to a parish. Furthermore, Olef belonged to the old Deanery Zülpich, which was dissolved by the French. Today the parish is part of the community of parishes (GdG) Hellenthal-Schleiden.
Furnishing
In the interior there is a baroque high altar which is two-story. This form is very rare. The two baroque side altars are also worth mentioning, as is a presumably Gothic fresco.
architecture
St. Johann Baptist is a two-aisled church in the Gothic style . In the west there is a three-storey bell tower with an eight-sided tower dome, which is built in front of the nave. This is followed by the three-bay nave . Three simple pointed arches divide the central nave and the aisle. The central nave is divided by two central pillars that support the vault. In the east there is the two-bay, three-sided closed choir, on the north side of which the sacristy is built. The windows are ogival, but without tracery .
