St. Katharina is a Roman Catholic parish church in Voltlage in Lower Saxony . The undivided hall church with a Romanesque west tower was built in the baroque style.

history

After the first few residents of Voltlage had to visit the Merzen church, a church was founded from there in Voltlage. This initially also belonged to the Merzen archdeaconate . The church tower, which has largely been preserved, suggests a church in Romanesque style from the 12th century. It is possible that the founding of the Voltlager Church can be traced back to the Rheiner citizens von Danckelmann and Luber von Beesten, who had patronage over the church. This church was first mentioned in a document in 1271.

In 1688, the church seemed unable to accommodate the growing number of believers. It had also been badly affected over the centuries and due to severe war events. Over several decades, money was collected for a new church building, so that the foundation stone could be laid in 1752. The exterior of the church is kept very simple, the vault is a simple barrel vault. The high altar and the side altars of the new church were made by the sculptor Johann Heinrich König (1705–1784) from Münster . The inauguration took place after a good three years. Part of the tower still comes from the old church. The spire can be dated to the year 1854.

The cemetery was located around the church until 1951. In 1960 a sacristy was added so that heating could be installed.

A renovation took place in 2002. The church was refurbished both outside and inside. A confessional chapel was also added. The heating system was also renewed and the celebration altar was replaced by a new sandstone altar. The old altar was made from the communion bench after the Second Vatican Council and was originally intended as a temporary measure.

Furnishing

Jesus carrying the cross in the tower of the church

The church is equipped with a magnificent baroque altar, the main part of which was built in 1692. In the center of the high altar is a picture of the Lord's Supper. Left and right of it the apostles Peter with key and Paul with sword, each framed by three columns. The altar is crowned by a canopy - a replica of the dome of St. Peter's Church in Rome - on which there is a figure of the Virgin Mary . Saint Catherine of Alexandria , the patroness of the church, is depicted with a wagon wheel under the canopy . To the right and left of the picture there are figures of Johannes von Nepomuk and Aloisius von Gonzaga .

On the left and right of the high altar above the entrances to the sacristy there are figures of Joseph with the baby Jesus in his arms and John the Baptist with a lamb and a flag.

Above the tabernacle there is a crucifix, the body of which tilts its head to the left. The common and common representation of the crucifixion of Jesus shows a body with its head tilted to the right. This peculiarity is justified by a legend which says that the cross was donated by a repentant criminal who wanted to make it clear that God also forgives sinners.

On the confessionals, which are set up in the choir on the left and right, are the apostle Peter with a rooster, which is supposed to represent the denial of Peter , and Mary Magdalene with a skull. The figures date from 1703. The confessionals have not been used since a confessional chapel was added.

The pulpit with figures of the four evangelists, which is located on the right side of the nave, dates from 1701.

The left side altar is the Marian altar. Mary is represented with the baby Jesus and a crown. Next to it St. Francis and St. Bernhard. On the right side is the Sacred Heart Altar.

In the middle of the church is the baptismal font, above it a chandelier. The chandelier and the ray monstrance date from 1711. The baptismal font (from 1728) was located in the church tower before the renovation. In the back of the church there is an oil painting, which was probably the altarpiece of the old church. The 14 stations of the cross are made in the same style. There is also a replica of the Pietà from Telgte .

In the tower of the church there is a figure of Jesus carrying the cross.

The baroque interior of the church is almost completely carved out of oak and for the most part still comes from the old church.

organ

One of the few remaining Klausing organs is located in the St. Catherine Church. It is especially valuable because of its wooden pipes. The organ was built in 1696 by Hinrich Klausing from Herford, expanded in 1896 by Haupt from Osterkappeln and renovated in 1966 by Stockmann from Werl . At the moment the organ is not in good condition and renovation is urgently needed.
