history

It is not known exactly when there was a church in Puffendorf. It can be assumed that today's church emerged from an own church of the Lords of Puffendorf. In 1533 a pastor named Hupert is mentioned for Puffendorf. There must have been a church in Puffendorf at this time, but the place did not yet have parish rights, because in 1550 Puffendorf is mentioned as a subsidiary of the parish of Loverich . In the 17th century the place came to the parish of Gereonsweiler . In the course of the restructuring in the French times, Puffendorf was separated from Gereonsweiler in 1804 and raised to an independent parish . Just two years later, in 1806, the parish elevation was reversed and the place became a branch of the parish Loverich, as in the 16th century. Puffendorf finally became an independent parish on November 10, 1837. Since 1930 the place has belonged to the diocese of Aachen , previously to the archbishopric of Cologne .

On January 1, 2013, the parish of St. Laurentius Puffendorf, like all five other parishes in the urban area of Baesweiler, was dissolved and merged into the new parish of St. Marien.

Building history

Little is known about the building history. Since at least 1533 the place had its own house of worship, which was located on the place of today's church, but nothing more is known about this building. In the 18th century, today's church tower was built in Baroque forms . In 1888 the church was in a very bad condition, whereupon the parish decided to rebuild the nave. In the same year the old church was torn down except for the tower and the construction of the current nave began. The tower was also changed by installing a large ogival window and a new main portal. The solemn church consecration took place on June 10, 1893.

During the Second World War , the church suffered damage from artillery fire. All damage was repaired as early as 1947 and the parish church could be used again. Between 1951 and 1958 the church was completely renovated.

Building description

St. Laurentius is a three-aisled and four-bay hall church made of bricks in the neo-Gothic style . The single-bay choir adjoins the nave in the east and closes on three sides . The bell tower in the west has moved in and dates from the 18th century. It is crowned by a curly baroque hood. The windows all have two-lane tracery . The interior is spanned by ribbed vaults that rest on eight columns made of polished granite.

Furnishing

The altar is a work of trachyte from 1957. The baptismal font was taken over from the previous building and was made in the course of the parish elevation in 1804. The triumphal cross in the choir also comes from the previous church and was made in the 16th century, but changed in 1951. There are also some figures of saints from the 19th and 20th centuries in the church. The stained glass windows date from 1987 and are works by the artist Monika Rütten from Jülich . Also worth mentioning is the completely preserved painting from the time the church was built.
