history
A church in Oidtweiler was first mentioned in a document in 1275, when the owners of the Oidtweiler farm sold their share of the patronage rights of the Oidtweiler church to the Cologne cathedral chapter . Since the right of patronage already existed over the church of Oidtweiler at that time, Oidtweiler must have been an independent parish as early as 1275 . In 1289 the Premonstratensian women in Heinsberg received part of the patronage rights. In the Liber valoris from 1308, the place belonged as a parish to the extensive deanery Jülich in the Archdiocese of Cologne .
Until 1559, Baesweiler, with the St. Petrus Church as a branch, belonged to the parish of Oidtweiler, but was then completely replaced by Oidtweiler and raised to an independent parish.
During the French period , the part of the Archdiocese of Cologne on the left bank of the Rhine was dissolved and added to the newly founded Diocese of Aachen , which also affected Oidtweiler. In the course of restructuring measures, the parish was dissolved in 1804 and the parish of Baesweiler was subordinate to it as a subsidiary parish. Only one year later in 1805 this was reversed and Oidtweiler became a parish again. In addition, the place Bettendorf came to Oidtweiler.
After the Diocese of Aachen was dissolved again in 1825, Oidtweiler came back to the Archdiocese of Cologne. Since the re-establishment in 1930, the place has again belonged to the diocese of Aachen.
On January 1, 2013, the parish of St. Martin Oidtweiler, like all five other parishes in the urban area of Baesweiler, was dissolved and merged into the new large parish of St. Marien. The church of Baesweiler was designated as the parish church of this new parish.
Building history
Nothing is known about the church mentioned in 1275. It is very likely that it was a simple Romanesque hall building . This church was replaced at the beginning of the 16th century by a single-nave new building in Gothic style , which today represents the south aisle of the church. A little later a north nave was added, creating a two-aisled complex.
In the first half of the 20th century the Gothic parish church became too small and it was decided to expand it. In 1929 the northern nave was demolished and today's central nave and northern aisle were built in its place. The bell tower was built in front of the old Gothic nave . The plans for the extension come from the architects Hermes and Schmitz from Aachen . After the building was completed, the church was consecrated on October 25, 1931 .
During the Second World War , the church suffered damage from artillery fire, which could be repaired by 1950. In 1976 the church was extensively renovated, with the south aisle (Gothic old building) being set up as a weekday church.
Building description
St. Martin is a three-nave and fünfjochige Basilica of bricks . The central nave and north aisle are built in very late neo-Gothic forms , the south aisle is Gothic. The parts built in 1929 are covered by groin vaults, the Gothic part by ribbed vaults .
Furnishing
In the church there is a neo-Gothic high altar from 1875 in the south aisle, in the main choir a 7 meter high cross by the Aachen artist Josef Jansen and an enamel tabernacle by the Aachen artist Fritz Schwerdt.
The historical furnishings include the baroque pulpit from the 18th century, the font from 1697, a four-seat choir stalls from the 15th century and various figures of saints.
The organ from 1953 is the work of the organ building company Karl Bach from Aachen and has 22 registers . The stained glass windows are all works by the Düren artist Hermann Gottfried from 1959.
