St. Leonhard in Apfeltrach

The Roman Catholic pilgrimage church of St. Leonhard is located in Apfeltrach in the Unterallgäu district in Bavaria . The church is a listed building.

History and description of the building

The nave of the church dates from the 15th century. The choir, which is bent slightly to the south, is even older than the nave and dates from the 14th century. In 1741 the church was rebuilt and during this time Johann Merk pulled in the stab cap barrel in the choir. The inner gallery on the west side was built in the 17th century, the flat ceiling in 1774. The church tower with a gable roof dates from the second half of the 15th century and is located in the southern corner of the choir.

Interior

The sandstone stipes of the altar in the choir probably date from the 14th century. The two side altars were created around 1680. On the left there are figures of St. Sebastian, to the side of them St. George and John the Baptist . The excerpt from the left side altar presumably depicts St. Catherine. The figures all date from the late 17th century. The right side altar shows the figures from the 18th century of Anthony of Padua with St. Francis and Antonius Eremita . To the side there are figures of St. Joachim and Anna. In the excerpt there is a depiction of St. Veronica, which all date from the late 17th century.

The choir walls are decorated with wall paintings from the middle of the 15th century in three rows. The top row of wall paintings is a bit older and dates from around 1430. On the east side of the choir there are depictions of the Passage of the Virgin Mary as well as the engagement of Mary. The south side of the choir shows scenes of the circumcision of Christ and in the two lower rows depictions from the life of Christ and Mary.

On the occasion of the renovation in 1741 with the introduction of a needle cap barrel, the choir ceiling was stuccoed by Matthias Willerotter with ribbons and rocailles. The simultaneous ceiling paintings in the choir were only exposed again in 1961. St. Leonhard is depicted at the feet of Christ with a cross and St. Rochus in the southeastern cartouche . The pictures in the nave were created by Bruno Tobias Lederer in 1774. These show St. Leonhard as the patron saint of prisoners and cattle, as well as other scenes from his life. A cartouche held by angels above the west window shows a chronogram with 1774.

The pulpit is marked 1683. The unmounted choir stalls date from around 1741. There are also several paintings in the church. The painting of St. Leonhard as the liberator of prisoners and at the childbed of the Franconian queen comes from the end of the 17th century. The image of the 14 helpers around 1718 was originally the high altar sheet of the Chapel of the Holy Helpers . There is also a figure of Our Lady from 1420/1430 in the church. Likewise a crucifixion group from the second quarter of the 15th century. The Pietà dates from around 1520.
