Pilgrimage Church of St. Mary

The Catholic pilgrimage church of Maria, Queen of the Martyrs and the Fourteen Holy Helpers in Need is in the center of Haßlach , a district of the Upper Franconian town of Teuschnitz .

history

When the place was first mentioned in a document on June 23, 1250, no church was mentioned; the existence of a church building in Haßlach is only documented around 1563. This predecessor of today's church was destroyed by fire in 1639. The reconstruction took place in the years 1645/46. The church received its present appearance between 1725 and 1728.

From the beginning of September 2014 to May 2015, the exterior facade and the damaged roof covering of the church were extensively renovated.

Dating

For a long time, the church on the Luckenberg in Haßlach was considered the oldest place of worship in Germany . A previous building of today's church is said to have been consecrated as early as 1124 by Bishop Otto von Bamberg , who was on a missionary trip to Pomerania . However, this thesis, which emerged in the 17th or 18th century, is probably based on a confusion of names and is now largely disproved. The route of the bishop, who consecrated two churches in “Vohendreze” and “Luckenberge” during his missionary trip, led from Bamberg via Michelfeld and Vohenstrauß monastery in the Upper Palatinate to Prague and not through northern Upper Franconia. "Vohendreze" is today's Vohenstrauß, more precisely its district Altenstadt , so that the name "Luckenberge" is likely to refer to the Leuchtenberg not far from Vohenstrauss and not to the Luckenberg in Haßlach. Another indication is that in neighboring Teuschnitz, which was first mentioned in a document in 1187, a new church was built around 1190, which served as a parish church for the surrounding towns of Reichenbach , Steinbach am Wald and Windheim . Neither the village of Haßlach nor the presumed church there were mentioned.

Furnishing

inner space

The interior of St. Mary is decorated in the Baroque style. Large-scale paintings on the ceiling, made by painter Tobias Gebhard in 1735, point to the pilgrimage tradition. The high altar of the church was originally created in 1665 by Andreas Müller, a pupil of the Kulmbach sculptor Hans Georg Schlehendorn, for the previous building of the Vierzehnheiligen basilica near Bad Staffelstein and given to Haßlach in autumn 1772 due to the new building of the basilica. It shows the three-dimensional representation of a tree on whose branches the 14 helpers are placed. In the middle of the tree top is the Mother of God with the baby Jesus , above a representation of the Archangel Michael . Above the passages on both sides of the altar there are figures of the shepherd patron Wendelin and the plague patron Sebastian . In addition to the main altar, two side altars complete the furnishings. The right one was created in 1663 by Hans Georg Schlehendorn and originally served as the main altar of the church. It also shows three-dimensional representations of Our Lady with the 14 helpers in need.
