The partial ruin of the Church of St. Marien

St. Mary's is the former parish church in the city of Zerbst / Anhalt belonging Ankuhn . It is a former monastery church and partial ruin . The Marienkirche belongs to the parish of Zerbst of the Evangelical Church of Anhalt .

history

The Church of St. Mary was built in the first half of the 13th century as a basilica in the Romanesque style from field stones . It belonged to the Cistercian monastery in the Ankuhn, which lies in front of Zerbst . The aisles of the basilica were demolished or dismantled in the 15th century. In 1585 the choir was structurally changed. In the Gothic style , the choir was lengthened instead of the pre-existing apse and was given a five-eighth end .

In April 1945, a few weeks before the end of the Second World War , the Marienkirche was badly damaged or destroyed in air raids on the city of Zerbst . As a result, the choir was initially structurally secured with an emergency roof . In 1991 a wall of steel and glass was built between the choir and the burnt-out nave . Since then, the choir or St. Mary's has been used as a church again, while the ship is still in ruins.

The division of the church between the Romanesque nave, which is made of unplastered field stones, and the Gothic choir, which is also made of field stones, but is partially plastered, is clearly recognizable.

The Romanesque arched windows of the nave are located above an imaginary center line, as is typical for a central nave of a basilica. The walled-up arcades , through which one had access from the central nave to the dismantled aisles, are clearly recognizable . A step portal in the west is also designed with a round arch . There has been no roof over the ship since the war-related destruction.

The choir is structurally separated by an ogival steel and glass construction. Several large pointed arch windows show tracery . The east end is polygonal . Supporting pillars can be seen on the outside . A small south portal has been the main entrance since the renovation in the 1990s. The roof over the choir is flat covered with sheet metal . In the north, a sacristy with a pent roof is attached to the choir .

The church bells are in a separate, free-standing bell cage in the churchyard .

Interior

The interior of the Marienkirche has been modern since the reconstruction. A torso of a figure of Christ belongs to historical furnishings . The keystones in the vault of the choir show representations of Mary and the Lamb of God with the winner's flag .
