History and architecture

High and side altars

The parish church of St. Michael zu Arget was built in the Gothic style at the beginning of the 16th century after the then existing Romanesque church from 1315 had been destroyed by flames. Remains of this first Romanesque church can still be found in the core of the church tower. Most of the building material comes from the "Darchinger Bruchten" and from the brick pond in the nearby forest, west of the church.

On the occasion of an episcopal visitation in 1610, the pastor at that time Wildenroth received 85 guilders to “beautify the church”. This enabled the current high altar to be commissioned. In 1651 the windows had to be redesigned. On this occasion, the Gothic pointed arches were built over. The current Marian altar was built in 1658.

In 1669, a violent storm brought down the church tower. It fell exactly on the church roof, broke through it and caused the Gothic pointed arches to collapse. During the reconstruction, the church received the current barrel vault and a new tower based on the model of the Theatinerkirche in the Bavarian capital of Munich . The church is a late Gothic hall building with a retracted three-sided closed choir and an attached sacristy.

Furnishing

One of the oldest treasures in the parish church is the Christ on the cross, a painted wooden figure from the 16th century. It was originally located on the south outer wall of the church, next to the niche in which a fresco on the Mount of Olives is said to have originally been.

The pulpit is reminiscent of the stucco work in Nymphenburg Palace and is said to have been donated by the Wittelsbach family . The two most valuable treasures are the figures of St. Cosmas and Damian in oriental costumes, left and right on the high altar. They come from the school of Ignaz Günther . The master and his father-in-law were specially designed for them around 1774/75 and are considered to be his last works.

By 1750 and the expected Hl. Nepomuk from the hand of Oberammergau have originated artist Johann showers. In 1976, this life-size figure was donated to the parish church by Elisabeth Tauscher from Ottobrunn and renovated by Otto Starzner from Landshut . Since 1996 there is also a baptistery in the church . The font is of Romanesque origin. The Way of the Cross in the church dates from around 1880, it was repaired in 1996 and inaugurated on February 14, 1997 by Auxiliary Bishop Engelbert Siebler .

Patronage

The parish church is consecrated to St. Michael the Archangel , based on the model of the Jesuit church St. Michael in Munich. The relics of Saints Cosmas and Damian also rest there.

Others

The field cross opposite the entrance of the church commemorates the numerous dead of the plague who are buried there. The parish church and the historic, partially preserved cemetery wall are listed as architectural monuments under the list number D-1-84-141-37 in the Bavarian list of monuments.
