The church

The Protestant village church of St. Michael is located in the Engerda district of the Uhlstädt-Kirchhasel community in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia on a walled churchyard . This can be accessed via a round arched portal in the east and west.

history

The church , first mentioned in 1194, has a pointed spire and four small corner turrets. These are the symbols of the church.

The nave , equipped with a Romanesque hall , originally had a semicircular apse as an eastern end. It had to give way to the choir . The wall with its rectangular ashlar is older than the one with field stones.

The access to the ship was initially in the north. The cornice stones of the nave wall were once the upper end of the height of the Romanesque building. In 1849 the large windows on the south and north sides were broken into and inserted. The sacristy was torn down. She stood between the tower and the ship. The east-facing tracery windows with a three-pass in a circle, like the groin vault of the chancel, are evidence of the construction in the middle of the 14th century. There is also an inscription plaque in the chancel about construction work in 1519. It was certainly the beginning of the construction of the tower on top of the high-Gothic choir.

The main focal point when entering the church is the chancel, which was separated from the nave by a pointed arch around 1350, the vaults and window edges of which are painted red. The keystone in the vault shows Veronica's handkerchief with an imprint of Christ's head .

altar

The winged altar on the altar is said to have been the most valuable in the Saalfeld area . The predella was remade in 1923. The closed wings show the birth of Chrisi. The first opening shows the twelve apostles with the text of the creed and the Sunday page Maria in the middle, on the left Saint Barbara, Katharina and Benedict of Nursia and on the right Michael, Bonifatius and Laurentius. The shrine placed in the predella contains a Pietà .

In 1701 a new pulpit was purchased. The organ was installed in 1735. The last restoration of the interior took place in 1977. Figures have been attached to the galleries .
