At that time, Lebenstedt belonged to the parish of St. Petrus with its seat in Wolfenbüttel, about 17 kilometers away . The pastoral care had to be limited to home visits, as there were no church rooms. According to a decision made by Adolf Hitler in 1939, no churches were allowed to be built in the city under construction, even the designation of church building sites for later church buildings was prohibited.

After the end of the Second World War , the number of Catholics in Lebenstedt continued to increase due to the influx of refugees and displaced persons . In the old village of Lebenstedt, the service took place in the Gasthaus Wolf in a barn that had been converted into an emergency chapel.

In 1951 the church building site was acquired. The foundation stone of the church was laid at the beginning of April 1953, followed by its consecration by Bishop Joseph Godehard Machens on December 20, 1953 . The rectory was built around 1954. On April 1, 1955, Lebenstedt left the Wolfenbüttel parish and trained as “St. Michael “an independent parish, on April 1, 1960 it was raised to a parish. In 1968 the parish hall was built next to the church. In 1975 the church was redesigned in accordance with the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council and consecrated anew on May 16, 1975 by Auxiliary Bishop Heinrich Pachowiak .
