The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Michaelis is a listed church building in Buttstädt in the Sömmerda district ( Thuringia ). It stands next to the historic town hall.

History and architecture

The construction of the church began in 1501, on a stone tablet preserved on the east side of the building it says In the year of the Lord 1510, on the second Pentecost holiday, the first stone of this choir was set .

The large, single-nave church with a retracted choir has a tower on the south side that defines the silhouette of the city. The two- bay choir closes with a five-sided polygon. The buttresses stand out strongly. The nave and the tower were probably erected at short intervals.

The building is structured by three-lane pointed arch windows, the tracery of which has been largely renewed. The arched portals on the north and west side are flat decorated with profiled walls. The pointed arched gallery portal was built according to a designation in 1551. It is accessed by a staircase. The structure looks mighty, the tower , which was added in 1586, is towering. The three-story, three-sided gallery is adorned on the lower parapets with monochrome paintings depicting scenes from the New Testament . The central part of the nave and the choir is vaulted with a wooden barrel , which in 1720 was richly decorated with stucco and paintings with New Testament representations.

Extensive security and renovation measures were carried out from 1978 onwards, the building was temporarily closed.

Furnishing

  • The pulpit altar made of wood around 1727 is the most remarkable piece of equipment. It is equipped with 14 life-size figures. It was made in 1727 by the court sculptor Friedrich Phillipp Puppert. The pulpit is carried by an angel and is located in the center of the altar.
  • The large crucifix is a 17th century work.
  • The Luther portrait was painted in 1695.
  • The baptismal font with an eight-sided cup is carried by four angels. It was created at the beginning of the 17th century and is decorated with fruit bunches and coats of arms.
  • The large organ, a work by the organ builder Peter Herold from Apolda , was made in 1721 with a multi-part prospectus and was probably partially renewed over time.

Tower and bell

The bells hang in the small helmet of the tower, they are connected to the tower clock . The larger bell used to serve as a storm bell, now it strikes the hour. A smaller bell strikes at the quarter of an hour. A third bell burst and the fragments were removed in 1904. Due to a malfunction, the bell of 1684 began to vibrate when it was not planned, causing changes in the statics of the tower, which has no longer been vertical since October 24, 1690.

Extra-church use

The church is used for concerts and exhibitions in addition to worship. In 2005, for example, the non-Christian Andrea Terstappen from Erfurt exhibited collages and paintings on the subject of the cross.
