History and architecture

The nave of St. Nicolai

The parish was founded around 1200 on the former Nicolaitor. The associated church was on the northern edge of the city, within the city walls, near the Nikolaitor. After the Reformation in Höxter, she became Protestant on July 9, 1533. In the middle of the 17th century there was no pastor for decades, the building was only used for singing sacred songs and was falling into disrepair. The dilapidated building was used again by the Catholics from 1662. Through the grace and blessing recession of 1674, the church was elevated to a collegiate church . For the next hundred years, the pastor was at the same time the dean of Petri, he held the title of pastor dean , which the incumbent pastor still bears today. By the end of the 17th century the building was extensively renovated and baroque furnishings were purchased. After the Seven Years' War the structure deteriorated to such an extent that the church was demolished and a new one was built, which was inaugurated in 1771 by the Corvey abbot Philipp von Spiegel zum Desenberg.

The large pseudo-basilica made of plastered quarry stone with a protruding transept and a recessed choir with an apse was built from 1766 to 1770 as a five-axis, west-facing hall with a recessed tower in the Weser Baroque style. The facade is elegantly curved towards the square. Lambert von Fisenne expanded the church considerably in 1896 with a choir, a transept and side aisles in neo-Romanesque forms. Today's interior is a pseudo-basilica vaulted on round pillars with cube capitals . The painting made by Karl Vath in 1905 was only restored in 1995 in the two eastern yokes according to findings.

Furnishing

High altar

In the high altar from 1782, reconstructed in 2007, there is an oil painting depicting the adoration of the Madonna by Saints Liborius and Meinolf . It was painted by Johann Georg Rudolphi before 1678 and given to the church in 1813.

  • The baptism is an eight-sided chalice made of sandstone, it was made in the 16th century.
  • The Stations of the Cross pictures were created by Heinrich Repke in 1911.
  • The graceful wooden Madonna was carved in the first third of the 15th century.
  • The wooden Pietà was created around 1900 in the Wiedenbrück school .
  • A large brass traffic light with a lot of driving work is marked 1706, it was given to the church by Godehardus Finckenberg from Corvey.
  • The wrought iron clock tower was built in the 18th century.

organ

The organ

The organ goes back to an instrument that was built in 1936 by the organ builder Anton Feith (Paderborn). The cone store instrument had 29 registers on two manuals and a pedal . In 1973 the organ was restored by the organ builder Siegfried Sauer (Ottbergen) and converted into a three-manual instrument. The case of the main work and the prospectus have been preserved from an instrument from 1711 that was built by Berenhard Klausing (Herford). In 1999 the organ received new Spieltrakturen of cedar.
