The Catholic parish church of St. Nikolaus is located in Wiedergeltingen in the Unterallgäu district in Bavaria . The church is a listed building.

history

The oldest part of the church is the church tower from the 14th century. The choir was built in the late 15th or early 16th century . The nave was built around 1700, incorporating the structure of the building from the 14th or 15th century . The church was extended to the west in 1921 according to plans by Michael Kurz . The existing west wall of the nave from around 1700 was reduced to pillars. In contrast to the previous building, the new sign extends over the entire west side and offers a portal each in the south and north.

Building description

The church is a flat-roofed hall building . Inside there is a double gallery from the 19th century. In 2015 the upper of these galleries was removed and the organ located there was lowered onto the lower gallery. The side walls of the nave are structured by arched arcades. The nave is covered with a red beaver tail, an iron patriarchal cross is attached to the western end of the ridge , which indicates the exemption of the church , which previously belonged to the Steingaden monastery. The retracted choir adjoins the nave with a pilaster structure and a needle cap barrel . The choir is closed on three sides. There are buttresses on the outside of the choir . The church tower is on the north side. The west side of the church tower is not structured, otherwise it is provided with arched friezes and a German ribbon . In the lower area of the tower there are remains of a cross vault inside. The church tower is covered with a gable roof consisting of colored mosaic tiles and decorated with a large ridge cross including a golden tower button.

The church's sacristy was originally located on the ground floor of the tower and was moved to an annex on the south side of the choir in the 18th century. The old, narrow staircase, which leads to the entrance to the church and leads to the first floor, is still preserved, but has not been used since the relocation of the sacristy. The inside of the tower is divided by wooden ceilings and wooden stairs up to the steel bell cage with electric bells. The wall openings for the old beams of the original wooden belfry are still there. A manual tower clock was in use until the 1980s and had to be wound up regularly. An electronic tower clock was then installed along with a church heater.

Furnishing

The high altar was created around 1671 by Gottlieb and Gottfried Einsle from Marktoberdorf. The side figures of the high altar show St. Norbert and St. Nicholas. The altarpiece from 1872 depicts the crucifixion of Christ and is by Johann Kaspar , Obergünzburg. Above it is the coat of arms of the Steingadian abbot Magnus Pracht in gold and blue. From 1696 to 1698 he was pastor in Wiedergeltingen. During his tenure in 1718 there were extensive new regulations in relation to the subjects of the Hofmark, which led to noticeable relief. Among other things, the hated building material was lifted. Magnificent's coat of arms was probably attached to memory after his death in 1729.

The tabernacle from 1928 is neo-baroque . The statuettes of the evangelists attached to the tabernacle are from around 1720. Johann Kaspar also created the altarpieces for the side altars. The altarpiece on the left side altar shows Our Lady . The Annunciation is shown in the excerpt from the left side altar. Saint Nicholas is depicted in the right altarpiece. In the excerpt above is the depiction of St. Ulrich.

The pulpit was built around 1720–1730. The pulpit contains busts of Mary and St. Augustine and St. Norbert. The sound cover of the pulpit is carried by angels. On this there are putti with crown and the attributes of the divine virtues. The trumpet angel on the sound cover is neo-Gothic . The pulpit is accessed through an outer door, to which a staircase on the north side of the nave led up, which the pastor could reach through a narrow door in front of the north side altar. During the renovation work in 1969/70, both doors were walled up and the outer staircase removed.

The frescoes date from 1787 and were created by Johann Josef Anton Huber . In the choir, these putti show the attributes of divine virtues . The fresco in the nave depicts the glory of St. Nicholas. The wooden Pietà dates from the beginning of the 15th century. The figures of Saint Catherine and Saint Barbara were created around 1500. The sparingly attached stucco was probably created by Michael Stiller around 1710/1720. The stucco in the choir was probably greatly simplified with the stuccoing of the nave. The apostolic crosses date from 1928.
