St. Peter (Rheinberg)
The Catholic parish church of St. Peter is in the center of the town of Rheinberg , east of the market square, on the Lower Rhine in the Wesel district in North Rhine-Westphalia . Its history goes back to the beginning of the 12th century, today's Gothic -style building was built at the end of the same. The sacred building consecrated to St. Peter belongs to the Deanery Xanten in the diocese of Münster .
history
The Catholic Church was first mentioned in a document in 1106, which regulated its transfer to the St. Kunibertstift in Cologne by Archbishop Friedrich I. von Schwarzenburg . At the end of the 12th century, a new, single-nave tuff stone building was built in the late Romanesque style. From 1392 a lengthy renovation followed, influenced by the Gothic , while a choir with hallway and sacristy, based on the Düsseldorf St. Lambertus Church , and side aisles were added. The nave was raised and vaulted. The west tower was attached to the church during the renovation work that lasted until the end of the 15th century. This was damaged by fire in 1567 and only rebuilt in 1637. Further repairs were carried out on the church from 1843 to 1845 and on the tower in 1885, as well as repairs after the Second World War from 1945 to 1951.
Description and equipment
The three-aisled basilica with its retracted, late Romanesque, five-storey west tower is made of both tuff and brick . The choir windows are by Friedrich Stummel , 1890–1892, and Egbert Lammers , 1954–1962. The high altar consists of two late Gothic carved altars , united in the neo-Gothic style in 1845 according to a design by Cologne cathedral builder Ernst Friedrich Zwirner : Above the Passion Shrine from Antwerp around 1520, below it Brussels Apostle shrines from around 1440. These included eleven panel paintings that are now separated , also located in St. Peter's Church. Also worth mentioning is the lavishly carved Baroque pulpit from 1701 and the Lower Rhine Pietà, a wooden baptistery from around 1500.
organ
The original organ prospectus comes from the Stumm brothers and is dated to 1769. In 1967 the instrument was redesigned by the Walcker company . In 2009 a new organ from Weimbs Orgelbau with 21 stops on two manuals and pedal was installed, whereby the old exterior was retained.
