The Catholic Church of St. Quiriakus in Mechern

The St. Quiriakus Church is a Roman Catholic church in the Mechern district of Merzig . It bears the patronage of St. Quiriakus, a priest monk of the Trier Abbey of St. Maximin . In the list of monuments of the Saarland the church building is a single monument listed.

history

The lower parts of the choir and tower of today's church were built in the 15th century . In 1718 a new nave was built.

According to plans by the architect Carl Friedrich Müller ( Saarlouis ), the nave was extended in 1871 and the choir and tower were raised.

In 1951 the church was expanded again under the direction of the architect Adolf Mönch ( Saarbrücken ).

During renovation work according to plans by the architect Hanns Schönecker ( St. Ingbert ) between 1971 and 1972, the church was given its current appearance. During the work, well-preserved Roman frescoes were discovered, which are now in the Saarbrücken Museum of Prehistory and Early History .

Furnishing

The furnishings include a late Gothic crucifix with a branch cross from the 16th century as well as wooden statues of Saints Quiriacus, Nicholas and Anthony of Padua .

The windows are by the glass and mural painter Ferdinand Selgrad (Spiesen-Elversberg). Jo Enzweiler (Wallerfangen) was responsible for the design of the portal from 1972 .

Is the listed in the cemetery next to the church Tomb of Barbe de Célinie Galhau (1781-1868), a daughter of Barbe de Galhau, the last mistress of the reign Fremersdorf , 1794 in Paris by the guillotine was executed.
