The Catholic parish church of St. Urban is a listed fortified church in Birgden , a district of Gangelt in the Heinsberg district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The three - aisled neo - Gothic brick hall of three bays with a stilted 5/8 choir was built from 1868 to 1869 according to plans by J. Burkart. There are sacristy fittings in the choir , the transept is currently closed. The four-storey west tower comes from the former single-nave, late Gothic predecessor building from 1480. Inside, ribbed vaults rest on round supports and pointed arches .

Furnishing

  • A small Vesper picture made of wood, Maasland work, dates from 1500 to 1510. It is ascribed to the master of Elsloo and related to the Vespers in St. Johannes Baptist in Hückelhoven-Ratheim and St. Marien in Kirchberg.
  • The cross behind the high altar is from the Middle Rhine region and dates from the first half of the 16th century.
  • An unusually early depiction of Maria Immaculata from before 1520 by Henrik Douverman
  • A baroque figure of St. Urbanus

Bells

St.Urbanus in Birgden has a 6-part ringing made of bronze and steel bells. They form the motif of the "Filled in Salve Regina".
