Tower of St. Vitus in Amerdingen

The Catholic Church of St. Vitus in Amerdingen , a municipality in the Swabian district of Donau-Ries , was built around 1755. The parish church is located north of the castle and is a protected architectural monument .

history

The church, consecrated to St. Vitus , has a tower, the substructure of which dates from around 1660, when the previous church was built. In 1751 this was demolished and around 1755 the current building with sacristy was built. The two-storey polygonal tower structure was completed in 1773.

architecture

First the choir , then the transept and the nave were added to the existing tower from the west . The floor plan of the building is completely irregular and the choir joins the tower on the outside in a shifted rectangle. Both ships have a flat ceiling and the main ship has a double gallery . The windows and the three portals are arched.

The tower has a three-storey square substructure with arched windows and a two-storey polygonal superstructure with corner pilasters and arched sound openings . The tower is crowned by an onion dome.

Furnishing

In the main aisle there are ceiling paintings from around 1760, which show the enthroned Madonna and Child surrounded by apostles and saints in clouds . Altars were created around 1900 , copies of the 18th century altars that were destroyed in a fire.

In the transept there are epitaphs with full-length figures in armor : north of Bernhard Schenk von Stauffenberg († 1609) and south of Veit von Scheppach († 1527).
