Willibald's Church

The St. Willibalds Church is a Roman Catholic church in Weißenburg in Bavaria in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district in Central Franconia . The church patron is Saint Willibald von Eichstätt . The building is registered under the monument number D-5-77-177-173 as an architectural monument in the Bavarian monument list.

The Willibaldskirche is located in front of the walls of the listed old town of Weißenburg , directly at the junction of Südlicher Ringstrasse and Holzgasse in Augsburger Strasse . The postal address is Holzgasse 1.

history

In since the Reformation purely Protestant city White Castle in the 19th century attracted an increasing number of Catholics, which is why in 1869 the construction of the Gothic Revival began Willibald church. The architect was Wilhelm Langenfaß . The model was the St. Marien Church in Göppingen . In September 1871, the Eichstatt Bishop Franz Leopold von Leonrod consecrated the church. Extensive renovation work took place from 1938 to 1940, with the original murals being whitewashed. Further renovations and restorations took place in 1961 and 1978 to 1980.

Establishment and building description

The main portal is flanked by the canopy-crowned figures of the apostles Peter and Paul . Two Ingolstadt paintings from the 16th century are in the side altars. In 1937 the parish acquired a late Gothic winged altar from Nuremberg , which was set up as a high altar in 1939. The image of the altar shows the crucifixion of Christ. In front of the north wall are a Willibald and a Walburga figure . The Stations of the Cross are from the 18th century. The organ was consecrated in 1940 by Bishop Michael Rackl .

The neo-Gothic hall church has a stone-view west facade and a choir-flank tower, which is crowned by a pointed helmet. The garden fence is from 1894.
