The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Willibrord is a three-aisled, neo-Gothic hall church in Cattle in the Kleve district . The church, first documented in 720, was under the patronage of Saints Peter and Johann Baptist until the end of the 17th century . The patronage changed in favor of St. Willibrord , who is said to have been active as custodian in the church in the 8th century .

Building history

The church was probably built in the 7th century as a separate church of the Frankish Count Ebroin . The original building was demolished in 1870 and rebuilt in 1871 as a three-aisled brick building by the church builder Franz Pelzer . In 1888 the west tower was added according to plans by the architect Vincenz Statz .

During the demolition work in 1880/1881, the workers on the north side of the church came across the foundations of a Roman thermal bath from the 2nd / 3rd centuries. Century, which probably belonged to the auxiliary fort Harenatium (Fort Kleve-Cattle). During excavations in 1980, further hypocausted building remains were found, which are probably also attributable to the thermal baths.

Furnishing

An Anna selbdritt wood sculpture was created in the workshop of the master von Elsloo in the 16th century.

The original furnishings included a Roman Weihaltar from the 1st century, donated by the Remi to Mars Camulus . The Weihaltar probably came from Xanten to Cattle in the Middle Ages and was built into the high altar here. After the new church was built, the Mars-Camulus-Altar came to the Schwanenburg in Kleve . Since 1967 it has been set up again in St. Willibrord.
