St Barbara's Church in Haceby is a redundant Anglican church in the village of Haceby in Lincolnshire , England . It has been placed on the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest as a Grade I structure by English Heritage and is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust . The church building is about eight miles east of Grantham , about one mile south of the A52 . The church has a double patronage - it is dedicated to Saint Barbara and Saint Margaret .

history

The church dates from the 12th century, but additions and changes were made in each of the following four centuries. The building was partially restored in 1890, and further repairs were carried out in 1924. The village of Haceby is mentioned in the Domesday Book and was once a vibrant town, but it has now shrunk and consists of a few cottages , a farm and the church. The church was therefore declared redundant in October 1973. A Thanksgiving service now takes place there only once a year .

architecture

The church is made of limestone and has a tiled roof. The floor plan consists of the nave with the cliffs , the south side aisle , the access verandah on the south side, the chancel and the church tower at the west end . The tower has three floors and a simple parapet . The two lower floors date from the 12th century and are made of rubble stones; the upper floor was built from ashlar in the 14th century . In the lower storey on the west side and in the middle storey on the south side, the windows have round arches . The upper floor contains two shuttered openings for the bell, which are designed with keel arches and quatrefoil on both sides . The north wall of the nave is plastered and an earlier entrance was bricked up. In the north wall of the chancel there is a lancet window from the 13th century. The east-facing window dates from the 16th century and has three openings. In the south wall there are two windows with a Y-shaped window mullion and a lancet window. The south aisle has three-leaf perpendicular windows in the walls facing east and south. The 14th century access veranda has a gable roof and includes benches on both sides. Two three-wing windows to the south and a single, similar window to the north are integrated in the upper cladding.

The archway on the south aisle consists of two bays supported by octagonal pillars . It dates from the 13th century. The chancel was built in the 11th century in the Norman style and has a round arch inside. Above the arch, the royal coat of arms of Queen Anne is painted, below which there are traces of a medieval wall painting with the Last Judgment or Christ's descent into hell . The sanctuary contains sacramental niches in the walls to the north and south . The octagonal baptismal font dates from the 14th century. The pulpit is made of oak and, like the paneling in the nave and chancel, was created in the 18th century.
