The Heilbronn penal institution is a penal institution of the state of Baden-Württemberg and is located in Heilbronn .

History and buildings

The main institute was built from 1867 to 1870 according to plans by the executive architect Theodor von Landauer . The adjacent open-air home was built in 1873 as a residential building for the prison staff. The main building has a four-wing floor plan ("Panoptic System"). The south wing was destroyed in the air raids on Heilbronn in the winter of 1944/1945 and rebuilt between 1948 and 1950. One of the co-founders and prison director from 1873 to 1896 was Karl von Köstlin , who had been instrumental in promoting humane penal systems.

Jurisdiction

Adult men who have to serve a sentence of more than 6 months are housed in Heilbronn.

Branch offices

The prison has an agricultural branch, the Hohrainhof near Talheim . Here prisoners can take on dairy and arable farming in an open prison . Unique in Germany is the opportunity to practice viticulture while in prison .

Capacity and accommodation

In 2008 the institution accommodated an average of 321 prisoners. Single cells are the rule. If necessary, they can be occupied by a second person. There are also cells of four in a separate department for the indoor area .

care, support

Psychologists and social workers are available for care and treatment purposes. There are individual and group events. External contacts also take care of the prisoners, for example for addiction or debt counseling.

One focus is on the treatment of instinctual and violent offenders. For the latter there is, among other things, the project Art in Prison . There are also father-child projects and the possibility of social training. Ten places are available for occupational therapy . The physical health is ensured by a prison doctor and a contract dentist.

leisure

The institution has an extensive range of sports. There are outdoor sports fields and indoor weight rooms. Team sports can be practiced. Tournaments with teams from other institutions also take place. It has its own library with around 6000 titles. Language and music courses, billiards and chess groups, religious and cultural opportunities complete the offer.

Work and training

Around 280 jobs are available for the detainees, 166 of them in own businesses. There are 40 places in the Hohrainhof branch and 43 places in the open-air home. The prisoners can complete vocational training, for example to become a metalworker, parts dresser, carpenter, bookbinder or printer. The secondary school certificate (also Italian) can be obtained. There is also the possibility of further training in language, IT or typing courses as well as taking advantage of professional training opportunities.

employer

The establishment has 210 posts for full-time employees. In addition, 90 volunteers are involved.
