The Evangelical Lutheran town church of St. Peter is located in the town of Eisenberg in the Saale-Holzland district in Thuringia .

location

The late Gothic town church is located on the north side of the market square, behind the Eisenberg town hall .

history

A chapel is said to have stood on the site of the town church as early as the 12th century . It was first mentioned in a document in 1219. The town church has been rebuilt several times over the years since it was built. In 1494 the oldest part, the late Gothic choir , was built. The nave was built in 1585 and the church tower on the west side was built much earlier. Until the Reformation, the monastery church (no longer available today, was in the parcel "in the Donitzschkau") was the parish church of the city. It was not until 1530 that parish rights were transferred to the church on the market, which had been subordinate to St. Peter's Chapel.

Interior decoration

The Gera painter Samuel Claus created an altar for the church from 1622 to 1629 . The altar consisted of a predella depicting Holy Communion , over which, depending on the church year, other images such as the birth of Christ , the crucifixion or the Pentecost event could be attached. The pictures of this altar have been preserved. The altarpieces, which were restored between 1985 and 2008, now hang in the nave under the galleries .

Today's interior furnishings date from 1878 to 1880. The altar, along with the pulpit and lectern, was made from oak by the court sculptor G. Kühn in 1880. The marble baptismal font was donated by Marie Princess Albrecht of Prussia in the same year . Behind the altar is a baroque forked cross , which was found in 1918 on the floor of the Catholic Eisenberger Gottesackerkirche .

organ

The organ was installed in 1976 by the workshop of Rudolf Böhm from Gotha .
