history

Foundation of the Sparkasse in Gladbach

The statute of the "Sparkasse der Bürgermeisterei Gladbach" was approved on September 13, 1853 by the Lord President of the Prussian Rhine Province, Hans Hugo von Kleist-Retzow . At that time there were only around 4,000 inhabitants in the special municipality of Gladbach, whereas the mayor's office in Gladbach had more than 12,000 inhabitants. It consisted of the three special communities Gladbach, Obergeburth and Oberniedergeburth. The savings bank was housed in the former Benedictine abbey.

Sparkasse in Rheydt

On January 30, 1854, the Oberpräsident in Koblenz approved the statute for the “Sparkasse der Gemeinde Rheydt”. She was housed in the old town hall, which was part of the building complex of the former Alexander monastery.

Sparkasse in Wickrath

On March 24, 1886, the Upper President of the Rhine Province Moritz Heinrich Albrecht von Bardeleben approved the statute of the “Sparkasse zu Wickrath ”. The savings bank should not only encourage saving, but also "give the wealthier in the community and other institutions the opportunity to make small capital temporarily usable".

First branches in Gladbach

The number of customers grew and so the business premises became too small. The council agreed to set up three branches, which began operations on May 1, 1901. In 1911, the Sparkasse already had seven branches and land was purchased for a new building on the Alter Markt. On June 19, 1912, Sparkasse Gladbach's first own premises went into operation.

World wars and their consequences

At the beginning of the First World War in 1914, the savings bank business was still developing positively. The Gladbacher Sparkasse expanded strongly. But the population lost their confidence in the stability of the economy and politics.

In the post-war period, local political decisions also had an impact on the Sparkasse. With the incorporation of Munich-Gladbach-Land , Neuwerk and Rheindahlen , “Munich Gladbach” with 113,218 inhabitants becomes a major city. The Städtische Sparkasse Rheindahlen merged with the Sparkasse M. Gladbach.

The law on the municipal reorganization of the Rhenish-Westphalian industrial area of August 1, 1929 ensured the amalgamation of the municipalities of Munich Gladbach and Rheydt with the incorporation of Odenkirchen , Giesenkirchen , Schelsen and Hardt to form the city of "Gladbach-Rheydt", which had almost 200,000 inhabitants. At the same time, the savings banks were merged to form the Städtische Sparkasse Gladbach-Rheydt. When the National Socialists passed the “Law on the Division of the City of Gladbach-Rheydt” on August 1, 1933, the Städtische Sparkasse Gladbach and the Städtische Sparkasse Rheydt became independent again.

During the Second World War, the savings bank buildings in Gladbach and Rheydt were badly damaged. Business operations were continued until shortly before the end of the war. The last payments were made on February 27, 1945.

Economic boom

The Sparkassen Gladbach and Rheydt celebrated their 100th anniversary in the “ economic miracle ”. On September 11, 1953, the new Gladbach head office opened on Bismarckplatz and in 1955 the head office of the municipal Sparkasse Rheydt opened on Marktstrasse.

In 1958, the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament passed a new savings bank law, based on which the savings banks also received new statutes. From this point on, the employees were no longer employees of the city, but employees of the Sparkasse.

The introduction of cashless wage and salary payments at the end of the 1950s led to a previously unheard of use of financial services by broad sections of the population. While business activity was previously mainly based on the deposit and credit business, the better economic and asset structures meant that new offers such as consumer loans, overdraft facilities, various forms of savings and securities savings were increasingly used. The Sparkasse developed into a universal credit institution. At the same time, the strong growth in the number of customers and the development of new residential areas led to the opening of further branches.

Technical progress

In 1963 the Sparkasse Mönchengladbach switched to electronic data processing. Five years later, the Sparkasse Rheydt put its first IT system into operation. A “mobile branch” started its service in Mönchengladbach in 1965 and a year later in Rheydt. The last trip was in 1993.

Mönchengladbach and Rheydt reunited

On January 1, 1975, Mönchengladbach, Rheydt and Wickrath became the new city of Mönchengladbach. This led to the merger of the three savings banks in the newly created urban area with effect from January 1, 1976 to form Stadtsparkasse Mönchengladbach.

On July 21, 1988, the old building of the Stadtsparkasse on Bismarckplatz was blown up. Temporary accommodation was set up opposite the construction site in containers on Bismarckplatz. The new building of the Sparkasse headquarters on Bismarckplatz was opened on July 11, 1991. In addition to numerous works by well-known Mönchengladbach artists, the water-light sculpture by Heinz Mack forms the center of the customer hall.

Social Commitment

Stadtsparkasse is involved with foundations, donations and sponsoring for initiatives and associations in the business area. In addition to sport and culture, social and environmental initiatives are also funded.

Foundations

In 1978 the “Sparkassenstiftung für Kunst und Wissenschaft” (Sparkasse Foundation for Art and Science) was established for the 125th anniversary. The foundation's capital at that time was one million Deutschmarks.

The second foundation is entitled “Sparkassenstiftung für Mönchengladbach” and was set up in 2000. It should occur where people's life situations require it. This begins with equipping kindergartens and ends with donations to old people's homes. When it was founded, the foundation's capital amounted to one million Deutschmarks and has since grown to 6.555 million euros thanks to continuous additional payments from the Stadtsparkasse.

The Sparkassenstiftung für Jugend und Jugendport was founded in Mönchengladbach on January 1st, 2012 with an initial capital of two million euros. It promotes education and upbringing, youth welfare, art and culture, homeland care and local history, traditional customs and sport exclusively for children and young people in Mönchengladbach.

The total capital of the three Mönchengladbacher Sparkassenstiftungen currently amounts to 12.4 million euros.

donate

The Stadtsparkasse Mönchengladbach has already given more than ten million euros to Mönchengladbach clubs, parishes and associations from the special purpose revenue. In 2017 it was around 672,985 euros. The Mönchengladbach youth received a large part of this money. Football and other ball sports teams, kindergartens or schools have used the savings bank donations to realize their projects. The measures in the youth sector range from modern smartboards for school lessons and traffic safety bags for first graders to supporting the youth city championships and the children's song festival.
