building

The Waid City Hospital is located on the terrace of the Waidberghang, the staff houses are located about 500 meters east of the hospital complex on Tiechestrasse and connect with it to form a loose urban unit. The buildings of the hospital complex are staggered along the street and adapted to the topographical situation, and the basement floors are accordingly three-story on the valley side and two-story on the slope side. Due to the lengthways construction of the houses, the patients' garden and relaxation area are spatially and acoustically separated from Tiechestrasse.

In terms of architectural history , the buildings of the Waidspital are typical representatives of post-war architecture. The staggered arrangement, which includes the outside space and defines different garden areas, is characteristic. On closer inspection, the unspectacular saddle roof buildings reveal a careful design: lightly painted, delicate balcony railings, white-framed facade openings, white-blue framed wooden windows, as well as the design of the entrance areas and inside. With a color concept and changing surface materials, an attempt was made to create a friendly, homely ambience with simple means.

The staff houses were part of the project competition announced in 1946 for the Waid city hospital. They should be spatially clearly separated from the actual hospital building and were realized in two construction phases in 1953 and 1957.

Until 2006, the four staff houses of the city hospital were under monument protection . The standard of construction was considered to be out of date and most of the small residential units were rented out to third parties. Due to structural deficiencies and a usage study, the city council applied for the staff houses to be removed from the inventory of art and cultural-historical protected objects of municipal importance and to be replaced by a new staff house at a location in the immediate vicinity of the hospital.

history

The origins of the two city hospitals, Waid and Triemli, go back to the great shortage of hospital beds, which reached unsustainable proportions in the first half of the 20th century. After no political agreement was possible for several decades, the City of Zurich took the initiative with two major projects that are unique in Switzerland.

The Zur Waid houses served as a hospital from 1907. In 1918 the old Waidgut was converted into a municipal hospital and in 1962/63 replaced by today's Käferberg care center .

The Waid City Hospital (today 261 beds) opened in 1953 to supply the Zurich North region, followed in 1970 by the Triemli City Hospital for the population on the left of the Limmat, which also provides cross-regional services (today 555 beds).
