The Dan Reed Network record company Mercury Records and the band had only managed to hit the UK charts with only two songs since the album Slam was released . This had not happened in the other two important music markets, the USA and Germany. From May 18 to August 25, 1990, the band Rolling Stones performed throughout Europe as part of their Urban Jungle tour. The Scottish band Gun and Dan Reed Network took part as opening acts on this tour, which included 45 performances. On this occasion, the previously unreleased title Stardate 1990, which Nile Rodgers had produced , was released as a single.

Stardate 1990 was released in several versions: The song was released as a CD single with four tracks and in the record format seven- inch single with two songs as well as a (color) maxi single with a gatefold cover. The B-side was the song Rainbow Child, which had already been released as a single in March 1990 and reached number 60 in the British charts.

In addition to being released as a single, the song only appeared on the compilation albums Mixin 'It Up (1993) and The Collection (2002).

reception

Stardate reached number 39 on the UK charts in 1990 , but owed this to the fact that radio stations in the UK turned to the B-side, Rainbow Child .
