The place originated in the 14th century at the latest and was first mentioned in a document in 1317.

The place was mentioned in 1783 in the book Beytrage describing Silesia as Old Gleiwitz , belonged to the Baron von Welczeck , was in the Tost district of the Principality of Opole and had 154 inhabitants, 17 farmers and nine gardeners. In 1818 the place was mentioned as Old Gleiwitz . In 1865 Alt Gleiwitz had 18 farm positions, ten gardeners and seven cottagers, as well as one Kretschmer. The residents were parish and enrolled in Laband. The Dominialvorwerk Alt Gleiwitz existed next to the village.

Due to its rural character and its proximity to the city limits of Gleiwitz, Alt Gleiwitz became a popular destination for the Gleiwitz people at the beginning of the 20th century.

In the referendum in Upper Silesia on March 20, 1921, 183 eligible voters voted for Upper Silesia to remain with Germany and 447 for membership in Poland. Alt Gleiwitz remained with the German Empire after the division of Upper Silesia . Until 1945 the place was in the district of Tost-Gleiwitz .

In 1945 the until then German place came under Polish administration and was then attached to the Silesian Voivodeship and renamed the Polish Stare Gliwice . In 1950 the place came to the Katowice Voivodeship . Stare Gliwice was incorporated into Gliwice by the powiat Gliwicki in 1951 . In 1999 the place became part of the new Silesian Voivodeship.
