As a perennial border is known in horticulture a bed or discounts that only or mainly with perennials are planted. Perennials are perennial, herbaceous plants, the aboveground parts of which die completely or partially in autumn. They are characterized by the fact that they store their nutrient and water reserves in underground storage organs. Strictly speaking, the bulbous and tuberous plants also belong to the perennials according to this decision criterion. However, these geophytes are not treated as perennials in horticulture .

In a perennial bed in the narrower sense, only perennials are cared for. In large beds, the goal is usually to create a bed that will show flowers over the entire growing season. In smaller borders, an attempt is made to achieve a flowering peak. The location requirements are very different and depend on which type of perennials are to be maintained. Typical perennial plants are, for example, the smooth-leaf aster , the delphinium , peonies and perennial phlox . A rock garden can also be a perennial bed. Then species such as stone purse , stone herb , blue pillow , Carpathian bellflower and Sempervivum species are cared for.

Onion plants such as daffodils , tulips and hyacinths are also cared for in perennial beds that are less puristic . The aim of planting these spring bloomers is to achieve their first blooming peak very early in the year. When the flowers have wilted and the leaves of these spring bloomers turn yellow, the growing perennials cover the wilting flowers. In this sense, daffodils and daylilies are a particularly successful combination . By the time daffodils fade and the daffodil leaves turn yellow, daylilies experience a growth spurt.
