The La Jarosa reservoir (embalse de La Jarosa) is also known as the La Jarosa dam (presa de La Jarosa) and is located in the La Jarosa valley , which belongs to the Spanish municipality of Guadarrama . It is the smallest reservoir in the Sierra de Guadarrama with a capacity of 7 million cubic meters and an area of 55 hectares. The lake is accessible from the main road (M-614).

history

The La Jarosa reservoir was created in 1968 as part of the late French policy of promoting major economic projects. A depression in the ground, in which the village of La Herrería was located, which had been uninhabited for two centuries at that time , offered itself . The remains of the village are not or only very indistinctly visible at normal water levels. The desert village can only be explored on foot when the water level is extremely low and the tower of the village church dedicated to St. Macarius can be viewed.

Features of the reservoir

geology

In the vicinity of the reservoir, behind the marshland near the shore, there are mainly rock formations with granite , gneiss and quartz . Biotite , muscovite , mica and plagioclase also occur occasionally .

fauna

Due to the biotopic properties of the reservoir, there is a great variety of animals there. Examples of invertebrates are stone flies or the red Apollo butterfly . Fish species such as pike , largemouth bass and rainbow trout live in the lake . Around and on the water are reptiles like the smooth snake and the Iberian green lizard , while amphibians have knife-feet and Iberian water frogs . Bird species include eagle owls , white storks and blackbirds , and mammal species include house shrews , wild rabbits , squirrels , wild boars and red foxes .

flora

There are three types of pine in the surrounding pine forests: maritime pine , black pine and Scots pine . Other typical plants are lacquer rockrose , rosemary and yoke thyme . Cornwall heather , ferns , rushes , ash trees and oaks can be found along the shore .

Hydrology

The La Jarosa reservoir is created by two dams and holds a maximum of 7 million cubic meters, which is rarely achieved, and is fed by the Guatel, Jarosa and Cerradillas streams. It forms the only water supply for the surrounding communities (in addition to Guadarrama, Alpedrete and San Lorenzo de El Escorial ).

Further use

Pine forests around the reservoir

La Jarosa is now heavily frequented by tourists, in addition to the natural experience of the reservoir also because of the hiking routes in the wooded area. A total of 93 hectares of land around the reservoir is also referred to as La Jarosa. The Madrid recreational area is part of the planned Guadarrama National Park . Another important leisure activity at the reservoir is fishing , which is why the rainbow trout stock is regularly replenished to compensate for the intensive fishing. As a result, the stocks of trout and largemouth bass have decreased significantly recently, while more and more pike can be found. To ensure the drinking water quality of the lake, bathing and other water sports are not allowed there.
