Stef. Engel (artist's name) (born May 7, 1969 in Hamburg ) is a German visual artist. She lives and works in Hamburg.

Life

Engel studied from 1989 to 1997 at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg Fine Arts , among others, Marina Abramović and at the University of Hamburg German language and educational science with the final state exam . Years abroad took her from 1991 to 1992 to Goldsmiths College in London and then from 1993 to 1995 to the University of Edinburgh , there the College of Arts, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Honors in sculpture . The bachelor thesis contained a series of art installations as well as the associated theoretical contextualization under the title Textiles crossdressed for success . For this, Engel was awarded the Watt Club Medal from Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh .

In her artistic work, Engel moves in various media forms of expression: from analogue and digital drawing to objects and multiples to video and performance art . However, textile materials are always at the center of her work. In doing so, she undermines the supposedly female connotation of the material in a game with gender and role models .

Since 2001 she has been working on a continuous series of “Outfits for the artist barbie”. Based on the Millennium Barbie "Marie", she developed showcases as a homage to important women artists. She tailors the outfit and designs a key work of the respective artist on a Barbie scale.

In addition to her artistic work, Engel volunteers for Bildwechsel , a self-managed, non-commercial artist project in Hamburg. In this context, a number of video thumbnails (since 2010 are paraconsumalaxia , Easter Sunday in the garden ), and since 2017 in cooperation with Lilia Tirado migrant Installation flower therapy emerged. The work dream tissue in seven includes Leporellos an accompanying Resulting watercolor iertes dream diary of the years 2017-2018.
