Stefan Olek (born January 15, 1920 in Poland , † January 21, 1991 ) was a French boxer .

Career

Stefan Olek was the son of Polish emigrants in France who came from the eastern Polish areas annexed by the Soviet Union . As a young man he worked on a farm in northern France that his parents ran. He was already involved in boxing as a teenager and by the time he became a professional boxer in 1942, he had already had a respectable career as an amateur boxer.

For this reason he was already in his second fight in Antwerp , he had on 20 November 1942 in the first fight Brussels against Jean Burton from Belgium won by knockout in the first round against the Belgian former European champion Karel Sys from Compete in Belgium. He pulled out of the affair well in this fight and was only defeated on points. Because of the Second World War, he was only able to continue his career in 1946. After a few fights, he met the Swedish former European champion Olle Tandberg on November 1, 1946 in Stockholm . Stefan Olek weighed only 85 kg, while Tandberg weighed almost 100 kg. Nevertheless, he came without major problems over the fighting distance of 10 rounds and was only defeated on points.

On March 17, 1947 Stefan Olek got the chance to fight against Bruce Woodcock from England in Manchester for the vacant European heavyweight title. This fight lasted a full 15 rounds and was won by Bruce Woodcock. In 1947 Stefan Olek then won five more fights and was only defeated on points against such high-profile opponents as Joe Weidin ( Josef Weidinger ) from Austria and the British ex-world light heavyweight champion Freddie Mills .

In a ranking published by the European Boxing Union at the end of 1947, Stefan Olek ranked 4th in Europe behind Bruce Woodcock, Olle Tandberg and Josef Weidinger. Behind him followed the Italians Martin, Bertola and others. de Paolis and the Belgian Eugene Robert.

On January 12, 1948, Stefan Olek won the French championship in the Palais des Sports in Paris by knocking out Georges Martin in the first round. He kept this title until the end of his career. In the years that followed he fearlessly faced the toughest opponents. On June 3, 1950 he boxed again for the European heavyweight championship. In Vienna he lost it against Josef Weidinger over 15 rounds on points.

He suffered further defeats in the years 1949 to 1952 from the British Johnny Williams , Jack Bell and Jack Gardner and the Germans Wilson Kohlbrecher and Gerhard Hecht . Victories get him u. a. on June 3, 1950 in a non-title fight in Paris against Josef Weidinger and on April 4, 1952 over the German Willi Höpner , whom he sensationally knocked out in the 9th round. Stefan Olek also ended his career with a victory when he won on November 13, 1952 in Gent over the Belgian champion Georges Rogiers on points.
