Stefan Nikolow Remenkow ( Bulgarian Стефан Николов Ременков; born April 30, 1923 in Silistra , † October 30, 1988 in Sofia ) was a Bulgarian composer and pianist .

Life

Remenkow came from a family of teachers. His father Nikolaj Remenkow taught history and philosophy and was the school director. The mother Angelina was a chemistry teacher. As a child he received piano lessons and began to compose at school age. He graduated from high school in Constana , Romania, where the family lived at the time. During World War II he served at the front as a soldier in the Bulgarian army. After the end of the war he studied music and in 1950 graduated from the Bulgarian State Conservatory in the subjects of composition with Pantscho Wladigerow and Wesselin Stojanow and piano with Dimitar Nenow . From 1950 to 1955 he taught form theory at the Bulgarian State Conservatory as assistant to Prof. Wesselin Stojanow, then specialized for a year at the Moscow Conservatory with Aram Khachaturian .

After that Remenkow lived and worked in Sofia as a freelance composer and wrote over 86 works. Some of them received awards, e.g. B. “Prelude and Dance” (1957). Most of his works have been published and played by many of the leading Bulgarian musicians and orchestras. In the course of time Balkanton released three long-playing records with music by Stefan Remenkow, the last in 1980. The Bulgarian National Radio , which broadcasts them, has more recordings . Among his works are an opera , an operetta , a musical , a ballet ; Many instrumental works - symphonies , concertos for piano and orchestra, for cello and orchestra, for violin and orchestra, concert rhapsody , sonata for violin and piano, piano sonatas , preludes , suites , a divertimento , a piano quintet , a string quintet , string quartets , trios for Wind instruments, film music; as well as solo, choir and children's songs.

His distinctively melodic music is characterized by “rhythmic ingenuity, emotional immediacy and a clear formal structure. His orchestral works are characterized by dynamic vitality and complex combinations of folk rhythms ”.
