Stefan Schorch (born August 3, 1966 in Erfurt ) is a Protestant theologian , biblical scholar and Hebraist .

Life

From 1987 to 1994 he studied Protestant theology and Semitic studies at the University of Leipzig , the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Free University of Berlin . He obtained a degree in Semitic Studies as a minor subject (1991), first theological exam in Leipzig (1994), doctorate to Dr. theol. with Siegfried Wagner (1998) and habilitation and qualification to teach the subject of the Old Testament at the Church of Bethel University (2003).

From 1994 to 1995 he was a student at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem as a DAAD scholarship holder . From 1995 to 1997 he was a doctoral candidate at the Institute for Old Testament Studies at the University of Leipzig with a scholarship from the Free State of Saxony. From 1997 to 1999 he was a research assistant for Semitic Studies at the Institute for Semitic Studies and Arabic Studies at the Free University of Berlin, in the Semitic Studies department. In 1998 he was a research assistant at the Gustaf Dalman Institute at the University of Greifswald , Faculty of Theology. From 1998 to 1999 he completed the part-time vicariate in Delitzsch ( Church Province of Saxony ). From April 1999 he was a lecturer in Hebrew and the Old Testament at the Bethel Church University, from 2000 to 2004 he was also a press officer there. From April to July 2003 he was an Honorary Fellow at the Department for Hebrew and Jewish Studies, University College London . From July 2003 he taught as a private lecturer for the Old Testament at the Bethel Church University and from 2004 was a contact lecturer for studies in Israel . Since 2009 he has been teaching as a professor of biblical studies at the Theological Faculty of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg .

Schorch's findings on gender and gender in the Bible, according to which the interpretation of sin and role models in this context were primarily made “in order to reinforce one's own positions and to give them a certain authority” , are particularly well received . In Hebrew Bible texts there are "very different cultural models of sexuality, partnership and family".

Since 2016, Stefan Schorch has been the first German honorary member of the Academy for the Hebrew Language .
