course

The Steinbach has a length of 4580 m with a height difference of 221 m. Its catchment area is 2.2 km².

The brook rises in the Hadersdorf part of Vienna's 14th district of Penzing . It runs through the Steinbachtal along the state border between Lower Austria and Vienna. The stream is heavily built-up over long stretches. In the village of Steinbach it crosses Lebereckstrasse at the Lebereckbrücke, an 8 m long and 7 m wide road bridge made of reinforced concrete . It finally flows into the Mauerbach on the left in the Lower Austrian market town of Mauerbach.

The Steinbach has a low risk of flooding. In the event of a flood of the century , the infrastructure and the resident population are affected to a lesser extent.

history

The Steinbachtal has been settled since 1633 when wood chopper huts were built. In 1901 47 people lived here in eight houses. At the upper end of the valley, an excursion restaurant established itself. The Lebereck Bridge was built in 1999.

ecology

The stream serves as spawning water for common frogs ( Rana temporaria ). The rare stone crayfish ( Austropotamobius torrentium ) was reintroduced in 1993 after it had been in the Vienna Woods brooks Hainbach and Eckbach in previous years .

The wood on the banks is characterized by fine and soft wood . Two problematic invasive plants in the estuary are the Japanese knotweed and the glandular balsam .
