nature and landscape

The Baddeckestedt quarry was used for the extraction of mineral resources until around 1990. The rock strata ( limestone and marl ) found there were formed in the Cretaceous around 100 million years ago. As they contain a lot of fossils , the area is also important from a geoscientific point of view.

The up to 40 meter high steep slope of the quarry, created by the demolition of the rocks, is largely without vegetation. On the other hand, the plant and animal communities of the poor grassland and ruderal vegetation , some of which are already interspersed with pioneer trees, have settled on the limestone rubble corridors .

Due to the climatic peculiarities, a rich insect fauna could settle, which in turn forms the basis of life for bird and bat species. An existing body of water represents a valuable amphibian habitat.

Flora and fauna

The rare animal species identified include the eagle owl , insect species such as the striped bug and the Jacob wort bear . It is also home to endangered plant species such as adder's head , blue lettuce , fringed gentian , stalk-encompassing Hellerkraut , meadow and field yellow stars and the Great Speedwell .

Other protected areas

The landscape protection area "Lichtenberg, Oelber Tal, Elberberg-Höhenzug" borders in the northeast .
