The Reitlingstal is a nature reserve consisting of three parts in the Lower Saxony municipality of Erkerode in the Wolfenbüttel district .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG BR 094 is about 12.6  hectares . The areas in the nature reserve are also designated as the FFH area “Nordwestlicher Elm”, which in turn extends over a total of 1,460 hectares. The nature reserve, which the conservation area surrounded "Elm", is since 4 December 2015 under protection. It replaces the nature reserve of the same name, which was designated on December 2, 1989. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Wolfenbüttel district.

The nature reserve is located in the west of the Elm in the eponymous Reitlingstal in the Elm-Lappwald nature park east of Erkerode . It protects several reservoirs, the long pond, the stump pond and the large pond, as well as the headwaters of the honeycomb that feeds the reservoir.

The reservoir ponds, which were created as fish ponds in the Middle Ages and are only used extensively for fish farming, have lush aquatic vegetation of chandelier algae , spawning herbs and milfoil . In places there are reed belts made of pine fronds , narrow-leaved cattails and reeds . The bank areas are occupied by narrow strips of wood with sloes , hawthorns, ash trees, poplars and willows. A woodruff beech forest borders it in the south of the stub pond . The ponds are an important habitat for various amphibians , including agile frogs and crested newts .

A very moist and species-rich alder-ash spring forest grows in the source area of ​​the honeycomb . In the herb layer here settle Small valerian and Avens , site typical species of moss and Dense fish herb in the upper reaches of the stream. Here is u. a. the fire salamander is native. The honeycomb is the habitat of brown trout , bullhead and brown lamprey .

The forests and wooded areas in the nature reserve have a partially high old and dead wood and habitat of various bats - Water , Large beard , Natterer , Bechstein , minke , Rauhaut- and Barbastelle , greater mouse-eared and Noctule - as well as various Birds .

In the area of ​​the ponds, the nature reserve often borders on agricultural areas and south of the Stummelenteich on beech forest and east of the Great Pond on the woods accompanying the honeycomb. There is a homestead to the west of the pond, to the north and east of which a road connects to the bank . The source area of ​​the honeycomb is largely surrounded by forest communities.

Parts of the nature reserve in the source area of ​​the honeycomb and at the large pond are touched by the Reitling nature adventure trail as part of the Harz - Braunschweiger Land - Ostfalen Geopark .
