Stephan Lederer (born February 14, 1844 in Wachenheim an der Weinstrasse ; † June 13, 1923 in Altötting ) was a Catholic priest in the Diocese of Speyer and a theological and local history writer.

Live and act

Stephan Lederer was born in Wachenheim in the Upper Palatinate in 1844, studied and was ordained a priest on March 17, 1869 in Freising Cathedral . At first he worked as a clergyman in the Archdiocese of Munich-Freising , where he officiated as a cooperator in Haag and Inzell .

On December 1, 1870, Lederer entered the service of his home diocese Speyer and became chaplain in Homburg , and in 1872 administrator of the parish. From April 15, 1873 he was used in the same office in Hördt , and from July 10 of that year in Oberotterbach . In this village he received his first independent pastor on September 20, 1873. On August 7, 1882 Lederer became pastor in Rodalben , where he stayed for almost 20 years until 1901. In Rodalben, the priest enlarged the parish church and collected donations for the construction of a girls' school with an attached kindergarten and sewing school. For this purpose he settled the Dominican Sisters of Speyer in the parish. When Pastor Lederer Rodalben left, he donated the building to the community. Today it is called the Dr.-Lederer-Haus and houses u. a. the Johann Peter Frank Museum . In Rodalben, Pastor Lederer researched the local and church history in detail, about which he published the book Documentary History of Christian Religious Exercise in the Graefenstein Office , which became a sought-after source work on local history and was reprinted in 2010. The clergyman also initiated the establishment of the first shoe factories there and founded the Rodalber Loan Association in 1892 in order to remedy the financial hardship of the rural population. In 1912 Pastor Lederer was given honorary citizenship of the Rodalben community and a street was named after him.

On his 57th birthday, February 14, 1901, Stephan Lederer, who has now received his doctorate, took over the parish of Grünstadt . Here, too, he was an avid local researcher and, together with the Protestant pastor Emil Müller , on April 22, 1903, he was the founder of the local antiquity society , which still exists under this name today; Pastor Lederer acted as its first secretary and also wrote the founding minutes.

On May 7, 1906, the clergyman went to Fußgönheim as a pastor , and to nearby Hochdorf on October 16, 1912 .

In 1919 Lederer resigned from his pastoral service due to increasing sickness and retired as an emeritus to the Bavarian pilgrimage site Altötting , where he owned a house and - as long as his health was possible - participated in pastoral care. He died there on June 13, 1923 and was buried on June 16 with great sympathy in a crypt under the outer arches of the St. Michael cemetery church.
