Stephan von Dewitz (born August 24, 1658 , † April 24, 1723 in Berlin ) was a royal Prussian lieutenant general and chief of the cuirassier regiment No. 8 , heir of Cölpin in Mecklenburg and of Daber and Wussow in Pomerania .

Life

His parents were the Pomeranian District Administrator Jobst Ludwig von Dewitz (1631–1696), son of Stephan III. von Dewitz (1607–1668) and Eva Essa Barbara von Pfuel (1611–1667), and his wife Anna Gertrud von Steinwehr († August 17, 1669). General Joachim Balthasar von Dewitz was his father's brother.

Like many of his peers, he was first taught at home. In 1673 he came to the Mörner Regiment as a free rider for the company of his uncle, then Major Joachim Balthasar von Dewitz. He fought in Alsace as early as 1674 during the Dutch War and when the Swedes invaded the Mark Brandenburg , he fought in the battle of Fehrbellin . In 1676 he became quartermaster and in 1677 after the siege of Stettin he became an adjutant in the Treffenfeld regiment. In 1678 he moved as a lieutenant to the Dragoon Regiment Sydow and pursued the Swedes with Colonel Treffenfeld to Livonia . When Colonel Sydow took over the body company, Dewitz also switched to the body company as a lieutenant and soon became a staff cavalry master and, in 1681, a real cavalry master. During the War of the Palatinate Succession , he marched to the Rhine in 1688 and took part in the sieges of Kaiserswerth and Bonn . In 1690 he became major for it. He was very lucky in the battle of Neer winds in 1693, he received two grazing shots and three more tore his clothes to pieces. From now on he celebrated this annually with a day of penance and prayer. After the siege of Namur , on August 6, 1695, he received the patent for colonel. After the Peace of Rijswijk in 1693 the personal company returned, but while still in the camp near Bruges he broke his arm when he fell from his horse. In 1699 he was in Königsberg in Prussia when he was bedridden for 14 weeks, seriously ill. But he recovered and in 1704 became a Prussian colonel. During the War of the Spanish Succession , he was transferred to Brabant in 1706 . There he took part in many actions, such as the battle of Malplaquet in 1709 . In 1701 he was promoted to brigadier, with the peace of 1711 he returned to Brandenburg. He was in the Leibcompanie until June 1714 and then became the commander of the cuirassier regiment No. 8. In 1715 he was then major general with a patent from May 14, 1713. In 1716 he was then chief of the cuirassier regiment. In 1721 he even became lieutenant general. Around 1722 there were proceedings against the officer corps, which also resulted in an investigation against Dewitz. In the proceedings he was found not guilty, the judgment was confirmed by the king on April 24, 1724, too late for Dewitz, who had already died on April 24, 1723.

On the order of the king, a solemn burial was carried out in Berlin, but his body was then transferred to the Cölpin estate.

family
