Joachim Balthasar von Dewitz (born February 25, 1636 in Hoffelde , † April 9, 1699 in Kolberg ) was a Brandenburg-Prussian general.

Life

Joachim Balthasar was the son of Stephan III von Dewitz (1607–1668) and Essa Barbara von Pfuel (1611–1667). Stephan von Dewitz was his nephew. He became a page at the court of Duke Christian I of Saxony-Merseburg before entering the Brandenburg military service. In the cavalry regiment of Major General von Quast , he took part in the Dutch War against France as Rittmeister in 1672 and was promoted to Major in 1673 . In the Swedish-Brandenburg War he fought in the Battle of Rathenow . In the battle of Fehrbellin , after the regimental commander Colonel von Mörner had been killed and Lieutenant Colonel Hennigs had been wounded, he took command. He contributed significantly to the victory over the Swedes and was promoted to lieutenant colonel during the battle. He also took part in the campaigns to Pomerania in 1675/76 , East Prussia and Samogitia . During the Second Northern War he was in command of the Brandenburg occupation forces in Mecklenburg.

He was promoted to colonel of the electoral body regiment in April 1679. In August 1686 he hurried to the aid of Hamburg, which was besieged by Danes , in 1689 he was promoted to major general and in 1694 to lieutenant general. In 1693 he was appointed in command of the Kolberg Fortress.

Joachim Balthasar von Dewitz was married three times: his first wife was Anna Hedwig von Mörner on February 18, 1666 (born September 15, 1650; † 1672). She was the daughter of Bernd Joachim von Mörner heir to Zellin and Anna Katharina von Schaplow . Anna died in Nuremberg when she followed her husband who was fighting on the Rhine at the time. The couple had a son and five daughters:

His second wife was Margaretha Dorothea von Dewitz († 1692) on April 23, 1677 . She was the daughter of District Administrator Bernd von Dewitz from the Meesow family and Barbara Sophie von Owestin . The couple had two sons and three daughters:

His third and last wife was Louise von Derfflinger († 1704) in 1694 . The marriage to the daughter of Field Marshal Georg von Derfflinger brought him a significant fortune, which enabled him to re-acquire a large part of the family property. The complete takeover of the dilapidated Daber family castle failed due to resistance from his cousins ​​Christian Heinrich and Gustav Georg von Dewitz, who owned smaller shares.
