Steve Bender

Steve Bender (born November 2, 1946 in Mainz , † May 7, 2006 in Munich ; actually Karl-Heinz Bender ) was a German singer , composer , lyricist and music producer (sbmusic).

He became internationally known as the singer (trademark "Glatzkopf") of the group Dschinghis Khan , with whose song of the same name he won fourth place for Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest ( 1979 ) in Jerusalem . The band's other hits were “Moscow”, “Loreley” and “Hadschi Halef Omar”, some of which were also produced in English. The group later created many remixes and medleys , e.g. B. the album "Huh Hah Dschinghis Khan" (1993) or the "History" for it from 1999, which was related to Steve Bender's "Reunion" with Edina Pop and Leslie Mandoki for Japanese television.

He was previously a member and leader of the bands The Poor Things , The Soul Five and Black Panthers , as well as Charly and the Neptunes and The Pages .

The disco hit “The Final Thing” (London Records) made it into the top 10 of the Billboard dance charts in the USA. In addition to Germany (where, for example, “Dschinghis Khan” headed the Media Control Charts for four weeks in 1979), he achieved longer chart placements in Canada, Japan and Russia as well as in Israel, where German artists topped the charts for the first time with Dschinghis Khan.

Bender's last comeback with the “Reunion” group Dschinghis Khan was celebrated in December 2005 in the Moscow Olympic Hall in front of 30,000 Russian fans, with Edina Pop, Henriette and Wolfgang Heichel as other founding members .

As a solo artist, he has released 19 singles and three LPs internationally . Bender has worked for more than 10 record companies, including Ariola, Avex (Japan), CBS, Jupiter and M Records, London Records (USA) and Teldec.

He died of lung cancer on May 7, 2006 . The musician withheld his illness from the public for a long time and underwent several chemotherapies. Bender last lived in Munich and left a wife and daughter, the singer Melanie Bender .
