Life

Leslie Mandoki was the son of László Mándoki and Ilona Mándoki, b. Koehler, born. The father worked as an employee in the Ministry of Finance, the mother in the personnel department of a restaurant chain. His younger brother Peter was born in 1958. Mandoki studied at the Budapest Conservatory of Music and, as a supporter of the student opposition, was persecuted by the communist government of the time. In 1975 he fled along with four other musicians and artists, including Gábor Csupó , on foot through the Karawanken tunnel to Austria and on to Germany. He later became a German citizen. Initially not very successful as a studio musician in Munich, he became widely known for the first time as a member of the band Dschinghis Khan .

In 1982, during his time with Dschinghis Khan, Mandoki released the album Back to Myself , which brought a return to his jazz roots and which, in retrospect, he regards as too rough and dark. This was followed by two albums, Strangers in a Paradise and Out of Key… with the Time , which sounded far more commercial and again earned him TV appearances.

This then formed the basis for his ambitious “People” or “ Soulmates ” project. Together with a large number of international stars (including Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull , Bobby Kimball from Toto , Jack Bruce from Cream ), he released the albums People and People in Room No. 8 , which on the one hand offered broadly compatible hymns, on the other hand some experimental rock music influenced by jazz. In April and November 2004, Mandoki made guest appearances as a house band in Thomas Gottschalk's ZDF two-part 50 Years of Rock, together with the artists then known as “Soulmates” . With these musicians, a broad retrospective of various rock classics from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s was presented in both programs. The recordings from the broadcasts served as raw material for the album Legends of Rock , which was released a little later , and which also features many tracks from previous albums as well as some previously unreleased live recordings by the band. In 2005 he also played with the “Soulmates” at the anniversary celebrations of the Münster diocese on an open-air stage in Münster. In 2003 he played in the boarding school series Schloss Einstein . Mandoki composed the opening credits of the ARD telenovela Sturm der Liebe with the singer Curly , where he can be seen in a guest role as music producer Leslie Mandoki in 2014.

Mandoki composed the campaign song Every New Day of the CDU for the 2013 federal election . In the Bavarian state election in 2013 , he ran for the CSU .

Mandoki is with the doctor Eva Mandoki, geb. Pfitzner, married. You live in Tutzing on Lake Starnberg . The couple has three children: Gabor, Julia and the actress Lara Mandoki .
