Steven John "Steve" Talboys (born September 18, 1966 in Bristol , † July 31, 2019 in Spain ) was an English football player .

Career

Talboys played as a striker in the youth area of the Bristol Rovers , but did not make the leap to the adult area and subsequently played for a number of clubs in non-league football in the 1980s, most of which in the Southern League for Gloucester City , the coach there Brian Godfrey had paid a four-digit transfer fee for signing Talboys. With Gloucester, Talboys won the Midland Division of the Southern League in 1989 and was also involved in the FA Cup in 1989/90 , when Gloucester achieved the best result in the club's history by reaching the second main round. In the 1-0 first-round win over Dorchester Town he scored the goal of the day, in the following second round match at third division Cardiff City he was also successful as a scorer, but the 2-0 lead of the outsider made up for Cardiff's Morrys Scott in the last five minutes of the game , Gloucester lost the replay at home Meadow Park 1-0.

After unsuccessful trial training at the professional clubs Birmingham City , AFC Bournemouth and Swansea City , he finally moved in January 1992 after 197 competitive games and 66 goals for a transfer fee of £ 11,000 to Wimbledon FC in the Football League First Division . While Talboys was only called up in the reserve team for the rest of the season, the winger, whose strengths lay in his endurance and his header game and who regularly put himself in good shooting and flank positions, made seven league appearances and two appearances in the premier season of the Premier League in the cup competitions. Over the following seasons he proved himself in the team known as "Crazy Gang" around the players John Fashanu , Lawrie Sanchez , Robbie Earle and Vinnie Jones in the role of supplementary player. At the beginning of the 1994/95 season he was a regular member of the squad and scored his only goal in the professional field in a 2-1 home defeat by Tottenham Hotspur in October 1994 , but a little later he was thrown back by injury problems. In summer 1996, the now ascended to the captain of Wimbledon's reserve team Talboys moved to 31 competitive match appearances for the first team free transfer to second division relegated Watford in the second division . There he came to four missions in the early phase of the season, but immediately lost his place in the team and was put on the transfer list during the season; he finally left Watford in January 1998 after three more competitive appearances.

In the following years Talboys was again active for a number of non-league clubs. After a short stay without a contract at Boreham Wood FC in the Isthmian League in spring 1998, he joined the league rivals FC Kingstonian for the rest of the season at the end of March 1998 , for which he made five league appearances. During his few months' stay at Aldershot Town - for the club he scored two goals in 14 competitive games between February and May 1999 - he won both the Isthmian League Cup and the Hampshire Senior Cup . His return to his former club Gloucester, which was in acute danger of relegation, ended in March 2000 after being used again because of Talboys' professional obligations. He then ended his career at Staines Town , where he was team captain before the 2002/03 season.

After his professional career, Talboys worked in the insurance industry, where he was most recently responsible for the insurance of professional athletes. He died unexpectedly in the summer of 2019 while on vacation in Spain.
