The silence is over the source pond in Springstille km 8.6, on the Helmer Bach km besides northernmost source disk 11.2 and the Asbach km 11.5 long river in Thuringia, Schmalkalden-Meiningen , in Schmalkalden from the left in which the Schmalkalde flows out.

With a catchment area of 55.0 km² , the Stille occupies more than a third of the Schmalkalde river system (156.4 km², of which 79.9 km² is above the mouth of the Still).

The silence arises from a spring pond on the southeast edge of the municipality of Springstille. Field names with Spring often refer to a source in Thuringia. Already in the locality of Springstille the river takes the Rößbach as the left and the Helmersbach as the right tributary. There were two grinding mills on the outskirts of Springstille.

The silence flows steadily in a north-westerly direction towards Schmalkalden and first reaches the neighboring town of Mittelstille , where it receives further source streams in close succession and, as a more important tributary, the Breitenbach. The valley of silence is a relatively wide and flat meadow. Of the four former grinding mills belonging to the village, the Neumühle is located about 500 m east of the Mittelstille location, 2 grinding mills (Mittel- and Obermühle) are located in the village and another grinding mill (lower mill) is located on Mühlweg in the lower part of the village. As a right tributary in the locality still flows into the streams .

In Näherstille the valley of silence between the mountains narrows Gackenberg ( 437.8  m above sea level. NN ) and Grasberg ( 370.6  m above sea level. NN ). This point was well suited for a ford: here a side branch of the Hohe Straße crossed the Silence, it ran in a northerly direction to the ridge of the Thuringian Forest and reached the top of the mountains at the Possenröder Kreuz to descend from there to Friedrichroda .

The path of silence is diverted to the west by the Gackenberg, at the same time the stream reaches the edge of the core town of Schmalkalden. Immediately on the suburb of Näherstille to the core town of Schmalkaldens, the Asbach flows as the last tributary with about the same amount of water as the Stille has so far. The silence flows from there in a slight curve, oriented to the south-west, and flows into the Schmalkalde just above the station.

Surname

Often the name silence is interpreted as still water. The river name can also be found in the place names Springstille (first mentioned in 948 as "Stillaha"), Mittelstille (first mentioned in 1210 as "Stillamedio") and Näherstille (first mentioned in 1333 as "Nydern Stilla").

Economic history

The silence was of great economic importance, especially for the city of Schmalkalden, and as a wide artificial moat it complemented the southern area of ​​the city fortifications. The street name Vor dem Stillertor in the southeastern part of the old town is reminiscent of the Stiller Vorstadt , a residential area and at the same time the technical systems located there in the form of mills, hammer mills and tanneries and the Stiller Tor (city gate in the direction of the Stilledörfer).
