Stony Lake is a lake in Peterborough County in the Canadian province of Ontario .
The lake is the easternmost of the Kawartha Lakes and part of the Trent-Severn Waterway . It is divided into an eastern part, the Upper Stony Lake , and the actual Stony Lake. In the south joins the Hells Gate of Clearlake on.
The water of Lower Buckhorn Lake to the west flows over the smaller Lovesick Lake to Stony Lake. It flows through at Burleigh Falls , the lock Lock # 28 . The difference in height is 7.3 m.
Other important tributaries are the Eels Creek and Jack Creek, which flow into the lake from the north .
The main drainage of Stony Lake runs through Clear Lake, Katchewanooka Lake , Otonabee River to Rice Lake and further over the Trent River to Lake Ontario .
Another outflow also leads to Rice Lake via Gilchrist Bay Dam and the Indian River .
Surname
Stony Lake was called "Salmon Trout Lake" by the early European settlers. The lake belongs to the classic Ontario "cottage country", which is visited by many people in the summer, with more and more settling on the lake shore all year round. The lake is also headed for by boats that use the Trent-Severn waterway and by sport fishermen. The fish that are caught in the lake, including smallmouth bass , largemouth bass , walleye and muskellunge .

Stony Lake is located in Peterborough County, about a 2-hour drive northeast of Toronto . The lake has a length of about 15 km, a width of 1.5 km and is at a height of 234 m. Together with Clear Lake, it forms a 28 km² area of water with a multitude of islands and islets.

From a geological point of view, the Kawartha Lakes lie on the border of two important landscapes. Like many other lakes in Ontario, the lake was formed during and after the last ice age . The lake is bordered by the Canadian Shield and the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence Lowlands landscape . In the north of the lake there are rugged granite rocks of the Canadian Shield, while in the south the lake is surrounded by a hilly, heavily forested landscape.
